Powerful 7.1 earthquake strikes Mexico City, severely damaging buildings

A powerful earthquake jolted Mexico City on Tuesday, seriously damaging buildings and sending people fleeing into the streets on the anniversary of a 1985 quake that did major damage to the capital.

Local television stations broadcast images of collapsed facades and streets filled with rubble.

7.1 magnitude earthquake kills at least 55 in Mexico, collapses buildings; reports of people trapped

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck near Mexico City Tuesday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said, killing at least 55 people and leaving multiple people reportedly trapped in collapsed buildings.

Mexico State Gov. Alfredo del Mazo said the quake has killed at least two people in his state, which borders Mexico City. Del Mazo said a quarry worker was killed from a rock slide due to the quake, and another died when after being hit by a falling lamppost.

WOW. The world's 5th largest city, #MexicoCity, just experienced a 7.4 mag quake & buildings collapsing left & right. Looks like a war zone.

Watching CNN. Major fires, 20+ buildings collapsed. Shallow. It will probably take a while to find all the damage.

Prayers for all these people. Hope they are rescued.

I read that this is the anniversary of the massive earthquake that occurred in 1985. Strangely enough, there were lots of earthquake drills being performed in the city this morning.

Sending love and strength to all those who have been affected. Como México no hay dos. :heartbeat:

So very tragic and sad for so many people there. The poor children... and the pets... I went through the 1994 Northridge earthquake in California and it was the most terrifying thing ever, and thus why I now live in Arizona. So scary for this HUGE and very populated city. Holding everyone there in my heart.

A 7.1 is a massive earthquake. The Sylmar Quake AZ referred to was a 6.1. The one in Mexico is 100x worse. I pray for these people. This is terrifying.

horrible. Early this morning a 3.8 quake hit southern IL (centered 24 miles from Olney IL and 7 miles from Albion IL) at 6:47 central this morning Some folks in my area (central IL) say they felt it. I did not. 7.1 is massive. Those poor people :(

I hate quakes and I know it's certain I'll go through a big one in my lifetime. Terrifying.
It's creepy it was the same day. I bet in years to come on this day people are going to be very nervous.
Are buildings there built to earthquake standards like California? I'm guessing not.

Enjoy Arizona. I miss it more than I ever imagined you could miss a place.
Especially right now when it's 35 degrees. Arizona will always be home for me.

Unfortunately this could herald an eruption by Popocatapetl, which is only 50km or so away. It lies almost equidistant between Mexico City (8.5m) and Puebla (2.2m).

The earthquake appears to have triggered an eruption of Mexico’s Popocatépetl volcano.

In Atzitzihuacan on the slopes of the volcano, a church collapsed during mass, killing 15 people, Puebla Governor Jose Antonio Gali said.

Popocatépetl is an active volcano in the states of Puebla, Mexico, and Morelos. It is Mexico’s most active volcano, previously erupting as recently as July this year.
