She was last seen watching TV in her living room. It was a late Thursday night — around 11 p.m. — when 16-year-old Delcia Mejias last said goodnight to her mother and step-father. The next morning, her parents went to work, and assumed she was asleep. However, when they got back to their mobile home, she was found dead.

It’s been 13 years since Mejias’ death; her killer has never been found.
Tuesday night, Miami-Dade County reopened the cold case, asking the
public for help.

A teenage girl was stabbed to death 16 years ago in her own home. Her stepfather has been arrested for the crime.

After nearly two decades, a DNA match led authorities to the man they say brutally slashed her neck: her stepfather.

Mata was questioned at the time and repeatedly denied involvement in her death, but did admit he and Mejia did not get along well, according to authorities.

DNA obtained from the victim’s fingernails was recently retested and came back as a positive match to Mata, authorities said. The DNA result was enough to establish probable cause to arrest Mata.

Officers at the crime scene in 2004 noted that Mata had visible injuries such as scratches, bruises, and a swollen thumb, the Miami Herald reported. Investigators never found the murder weapon.

The motive for the murder remains unclear.

Miami-Dade police had long suspected Mata was connected to her death, but detectives got their break when forensics experts were able to match DNA taken from the young Mejias with Mata’s. Investigators then linked that to other physical evidence to solidify their case.

Watsonville police worked with Miami-Dade investigators to find Mata, arresting the man with help from Santa Cruz police.
