LORAIN -- Police have identified the body found Monday near the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks as 26-year-old Lorain resident Edgardo Alicea and say they are investigating his death as a homicide.

Lorain County Deputy Coroner Dr. Dana Parsons said yesterday he had not yet ruled on the cause of death, but it was suspicious in nature.

Alicea's body was found near railroad tracks between the Black River and Broadway around 4:20 p.m. Monday. The body was discovered by a person walking on a nearby path, according to Lt. James Rohner of the Lorain Police Department.

Rohner said it was too early to speculate whether the death was gang- or drug-related, and he would not comment on how the body ended up near the railroad tracks.

In exchange for pleading guilty to aggravated murder, felonious assault and kidnapping, Birriel-Torres, 23, was sentenced to 33 years to life in prison...

Birriel-Torres and Jonathon Robles-Cruz — who still is awaiting trial — were accused of kidnapping 26-year-old Edgardo Alicea and killing him near the railroad tracks by the Frank Nardini Gateway...

Jack Bradley, one of Birriel-Torres’ defense attorneys, said his client and another person killed Alicea, a drug addict, because he had stolen $10,000 in cash from a drug ring run by Marcos Marcano. “Our belief is this guy Alicea ripped them off and Marcano ordered him killed,” Bradley said.

A second gunman accused in what prosecutors suspect was a drug hit took a plea deal Monday, agreeing to serve 28 years to life in prison in exchange for prosecutors dropping a capital specification that could have sent Jonathon Robles-Cruz to death row if he had been convicted at trial.

Robles-Cruz, 25, entered guilty pleas to aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault and kidnapping.
