TX - Corey Brooks, 21, Fort Bend, 19 June 1998
Corey Brooks was last seen alive in 1998. Steven Carrington, who shared a house with Brooks and other family members outside the Orchard community, confessed last month to murdering Brooks at their home and throwing him into the nearby Brazos River. Brooks’ body was never recovered.
Nonetheless, some eight years after the murder, members of the non-profit search-and-rescue organization Texas EquuSearch haven’t given up the search for Brooks’ body.
According to an affidavit, Carrington told investigators he shot Brooks, who was 21 at the time, and wrapped him in blankets. Then, with the help of a man identified as Janus Parker, Carrington put Brooks’ body into the trunk of a car. The two men drove to a bridge on F.M. 1489 over the flooded Brazos River and threw Brooks’ body into the torrent below.
At one point, some law enforcement officials had theorized that, because the Brazos was at flood stage that night, Brooks’ body could have been swept miles downstream and would never be recovered.
In a recent interview, however, EquuSearch Search Director Joe Huston said he now has reason to believe the body still could be relatively near the F.M. 1489 bridge.
If that proves to be true, Huston reasons, the box with Brooks remains still could be fairly close to the bridge.
Affidavit Indicates 7-Year Cover-up In Corey Brooks Murder Case
From the beginning, Fort Bend County Sheriff’s detectives treated the missing person cases of Teketria Buggs and Corey Brooks as a joint investigation – despite the fact the two disappeared on days seven years apart.
After Funeral, Carrington Confesses To Buggs' Killing
Seven hours after 12-year-old Teketria Buggs’ Friday funeral in Richmond, her stepfather, Steven Carrington, confessed to her murder.
It was Carrington’s second such confession in two weeks; on Dec. 16 he admitted to the 1998 killing of Corey Brooks.

Why is it that when a custodial parent fails to provide for a child it is called neglect and is a criminal matter. But when a non custodial parent fails to provide it is called failure to support and is a civil matter?

Thanks for posting about this case! I've been following Teke Buggs case and always thought Carrington had committed the murder...then came his confessions. I commend Tx Equusearch for their tenacity in trying to find Corey Brooks body after all this time. Certainly hope also that Carrington's confessions do not take away from the DA seeking the correct punishment for him...Rest in Peace
