An autopsy performed Monday revealed that the object found along a road in Cedar Lawn Cemetery was a 17-week-old human fetus.

Council Bluffs Police officers were called to Cedar Lawn Cemetery, located at 1350 East Pierce St., at 4 p.m. on Saturday, after witnesses walking through the cemetery reported seeing what appeared to be a deceased human fetus lying on the roadway.

Sgt. Jerry Mann of the Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division said that a husband and wife were walking in the cemetery in what is known as the "Veterans' section" when they discovered the body lying on the edge of the roadway. One stayed at the scene while the other returned to their home and called police.

Mann said that officers arrived on the scene at approximately 4:30 p.m. and began the investigation. The Council Bluffs Fire Department was called to light the area so that pictures could be taken of the scene.

Investigators were on scene until approximately 9 p.m., Mann said.

The initial information provided by the autopsy conducted at the State Medical Examiner's Office in Ankeny revealed that the fetus was 17 weeks into term and male. Mann also said that it is believed that the fetus has been outside for approximately 14 days.

Mann said that no more information about the autopsy would be available until the official written report is issued in two to six weeks.

The investigation into how the fetus ended up in the cemetery is ongoing, and detectives are asking anyone with potential information about the incident to contact the Criminal Investigation Division at (712) 326-2509 or contact Crime Stoppers at (712) 328-STOP.

A toxicology report released on Friday confirmed the presence of methanol, a component of embalming fluid, in the fetus. That put to rest one theory, but raised new questions. Had the fetus been properly buried, then dug up? Or did it come from a research lab and get dumped where it was found?
