A 57-year-old Vancouver woman was stabbed to death amid a botched home invasion of her apartment in a Belize retirement community, according to police from the Central American country.

Patricia Lynn Nichiporowich, a snowbird who had operated an environmental services company in Vancouver, was stabbed to death inside her second-storey unit Tuesday night in the wealthy Consejo Shores area of the Corozal District, according to Corozal police's Assistant Supt. Daniel Arzu.

"Upon the police entering the building, they saw this Caucasian lady lying face down on the floor in the living room in what appeared to be a pool of blood, with several multiple stab wounds to her neck and body," Arzu said in a telephone interview Thursday.
Arzu said investigators believe the motive was robbery, but nothing appeared to have been taken from the home.
"There certainly was a home invasion."
He said the home hadn't been ransacked.

Thanks for opening a thread on this case, I think Ms. Nichiporowich's murder deserves more close attention. I've followed it because of coming from the Vancouver area, and an interest in expat lifestyles and crimes against expats.

I'm just going to post a little bit at a time, as there is some conflicting/confusing details that I think are worth pointing out. The Canadian media hasn't done much fact checking on the case, so there are differences between Canadian and local reports, to begin.

The first conflicting info came out right away, with news of an arrest. "Police have a man in custody after a Canadian woman was found stabbed to death in a quiet retirement village in Belize Tuesday night, her family says." http://www.torontosun.com/2013/11/01/canadian-retiree-murdered-in-belize

I will post links to the articles from the Belize media, but police have never made an arrest, no one saw the perp, the case has not been solved.

Here is a full account of the crime in the Belize press, from a local reporter who interviewed neighbours and police. http://amandala.com.bz/news/leads-murder-canadian-woman-consejo-2/

Police told Amandala today that they still have no leads into the murder of Canada national, Patricia Lynn Nichiporowich, 57, a resident of Consejo, Corozal, who died after she was stabbed multiple times and her throat slashed in her Consejo Shores home by a killer or killers who invaded her home between 5:30 and 6:30 Tuesday evening, October 29.

It goes on to report that neighbours heard her screams but were unable to enter her home because it was thoroughly secured against burglars. A neighbor had to go and get a ladder to climb onto the 2nd floor living area. So here we have a home invasion, committed at dinnertime when the victim would be around, rather than away or sleeping, and where the perp(s) apparently climbed a wall to get in and out.

Secondly, the article reports police as stating there were expensive electronics lying around that weren't taken. And yet the perp (s) did take the extra time needed, not just to slash the victim and run, but to stab her repeatedly and slash her throat.

I've followed enough cases on Websleuths (for eg Theresa Sievers), that this scenario doesn't indicate to me that robbery was the motive, I think the motive was murder.

This post is to collect links to Belizean news stories, as the Canadian media stories aren't as helpful but typically show up on a web search. Unfortunately, these stories are disappearing off the web as time passes, in some cases you have to search the headline to find them.
I’ve quoted the parts of any story that appears to add new information to the ones cited above.

Oct 30, 2013 Canadian woman is stabbed more than eight times inside her house in Consejo edition.channel5belize.com/archives/920007
Patricia Lynn Nichiporowich who had been living in the Consejo area in the outskirts of Corozal Town since May first. Her common-law left for Canada earlier this week and she was home alone when her life was cut short. Her killers apparently entered the secured house from the rear and police found footprints as well as the murder weapon…A stainless steel eight-inch blade knife, believed to be the murder weapon, was retrieved from the scene. Nichiporowich and her common-law had been renting in the area since May of this year and she was to relocate to San Ignacio shortly… She had a partner who is out of the country right now. I understand that he might have departed the country on Monday and she stayed back preparing to migrate to San Ignacio in the Cayo District.

Oct. 30, 2013 Canadian Retiree Killed In Consejo http://www.7newsbelize.com/sstory.php?nid=26938
"It appears that a person (or persons) may have made entry by climbing to the upper flat of the building, and exited by the same means, jumping down and making their escape. That is basically what we discovered. We found a knife on the couch inside the living room, smeared with what appears to blood, and the injuries observed on the body would seem to be that of injuries from a sharp object… I believe that the person or persons who gained entry to that building were extremely distracted. They had to quickly flee that scene because of the presence of the neighbours. From information gathered, the neighbours were alerted by screaming and panicked yelling, and they responded.” Investigators are not sure if there is anything missing, but they are doubtful because there were quite a bit of small but valuable electronics, that could have been an easy haul, which were left undisturbed.
In Canada, Nichiporowich was an indoor air quality specialist with over 30 years’ experience. Police say that her spouse left Belize on Monday, and he is currently in Florida.

we told you that one person had been detained for questioning. That person was released from police custody due to lack of evidence and to date there are no leads whatsoever that may direct police to Nichiporowich murderer…

Dec. 18, 2013 Foreign national being sought for questioning in the murder of Canadian retiree http://edition.channel5belize.com/archives/93535
There were little to no clues as to who could have committed the heinous crime as Nichiporowich’s husband had just left the country en route to the U.S. one day earlier. One person was detained and then subsequently released, but reports are now that the person of interest in the ongoing police investigation is not in the country and can only be contacted through a local attorney here in Belize. That person, a foreign national, is being sought by Corozal police, who say that they are in contact with their U.S. counterparts for assistance

Murder of Patricia Nichiporowich remains unsolved one year later https://www.breakingbelizenews.com/2014/10/28/murder-patricia-nichiporowich-remains-unsolved-year/
Indications are that one of the persons whom the police wanted to talk with has been out of Belize since the brutal murder on October 29, 2013.

Oct 31, 2014 AFTER 1 YEAR, STILL NO ARREST FOR BRUTAL MURDER OF CANADIAN WOMAN
http://amandala.com.bz/news/1-year-arrest-brutal-murder-canadian-woman/
At first observation, a number of cut wounds were seen on the body, which appeared to have been caused by a machete. According to police, it also appeared that she had been raped, but this was not confirmed by the autopsy conducted on her corpse.

Strange they would climb into a second story apartment when the partner has left. Why there? Does not look like an easy thing to do

Since I've just linked to this CBC story, I want to point out an inaccuracy:

Nov 1, 2013 Lynn Nichiporowich was in the process of moving her life to the village of Consejo
http://www.cbc.ca/beta/news/canada/...porowich-stabbed-to-death-in-belize-1.2303938

Actually, as several of the Belize media reports cited above state, she was just about to move out of this house in Consejo Shores. It's not clear where exactly she was moving to, but it was going to be in San Ignacio, not far away.

She also posted this information on the forum Expat.com, where she posted as Nichi. http://www.expat.com/forum/profile.php?id=819297&lang=en She started posting in July, 2013, sharing what she’d learned about the practicalities of living in Belize, her frustration with the real estate market and with the shenanigans of developers, her discontent with living in the expat enclave in Consejo, and her plans to move to San Ignacio.

She also discussed that US border officers wouldn’t allow her to visit Florida with her partner, even though she had a house there, and so she was planning to sell it. Not sure if you can see all her posts if you’re not a member of the forum. http://www.expat.com/forum/profile.php?id=819297&lang=en&section=timeline
(Note: the likely reason she was prevented from entering the US with her US boyfriend, is immigration would be concerned she’d outstay her 6 month visa and just never leave.)

There's a follow-up article from the Belize media:

July 14, 2015 Corozal Police Is Accused Of Being Corrupt
http://www.ctv3belizenews.com/index...f-being-corrupt&catid=44:education&Itemid=112

"while police believe that the motive behind Nichiporowich’s murder is robbery, her common-law-husband, David Dorenzo, who had travelled to Florida just the day before she was murdered, thinks otherwise. Here is what he stated in an interview he shared on the social media.

David Dorenzo- Nichiporowich, Common-law-husband
"The churches spent much time advising North Americans particularly on the internet blogs to spent time to investigate the country before moving in when retiring, she also warned of unscrupulous North American developers who sold a dream; the dream, an unimproved piece of land with a promise and a picture, I am sure the development community deprive mostly of North American builder’s I should say were less than happy with what she wrote on these blogs.

“The Corozal Police are incompetent and I worst they are completely corrupt, that is the protection that won’t be afforded you the Expat should you decide to live and retire in Belize. While there is no official count of North Americans Expats in Belize someone did estimate that there are approximately 3000, it doesn’t seem like a lot but I think it is an understatement but when one notes adding totally the number of house breakings, robberies, house invasions, outrage murders of North Americans, the amount of crime against Expats is a significant statistics, as I said earlier North Americans are prey, we have money and stuff that the average indigent Belizean will never be able to afford, again if you are living in Belize or contemplating retiring in Belize please get a brain scan.

If you are a white North American Expat I believe you are prey with a target on your back for the natives; breaking, home invasion, stuff robberies and killings are a fact of life in Belize. The natives are rarely quite when the crime committed against North Americans Expats so that the perpetrators know they can commit the crimes with impunity. Police protection is none existent and self-protection is almost impossible as it is illegal to own a weapon in Belize. Let me just summarize by saying that if you live or plan to retire in Belize please get a brain scan.”

What I've found (or not found) about PLN's life on the web:

I haven't been able to find an obituary.

Her Facebook page doesn't show much on it's public settings. https://www.facebook.com/lynn.nichi?ref=ts&fref=ts&__nodl
She'd lived and travelled in various exotic places like Africa. In 2012 she posted that she'd moved to Squamish, outside Vancouver. In April 2013 she posted that 'they' were driving through Texas and Mexico, presumably this was their drive to Belize, other sources state she'd lived there since May 2013.

She has a Linked-in profile https://ca.linkedin.com/in/nichiporowich
showing her as a partner in the Vancouver business Eco-Impact and Mould Experts in Vancouver. I'm not a member of Linked-in so can't see the rest of her profile.

https://www.bbb.org/mbc/business-re...pact-and-mold-experts-in-vancouver-bc-1232252
Shows the business was started in 2006, and her name at that time was Lynn Ratcliffe, her business partner was Ryan M. Ratcliffe.

It seems to me this was a straight up murder.

It seems to me that the partner knew a lot about the ability of locals to commit crimes with impunity.

This terrible crime happened the day after the partner left the country. How unfortunate.

Were they about to sell their property in Florida, property that she didn't have access to?

I suppose that a hired killing might have crossed everyone's minds.

She mentioned her house in Florida a few times in posting as Nichi in the Belize branch of Expat.com She always referred to it as her house, never 'ours'.

August 28, 2013 she said she'd bought a small house in Florida the previous year for a fraction of the kind of prices she was seeing in Belize. http://www.expat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=297068#1453837

She posted a few times on October 22, 2013 (1 week before her death) on the Expat.com Belize forum in a thread titled Immigration, that she was living in Belize because of all the trouble she'd had trying to cross the border into Florida, where she owned a home. Last time she'd crossed the border she'd been told she could not even transit between Canada and Belize via the US because she had a US partner "not even married", therefore she'd "abandoned" her house in Florida, a little later stating she would most likely sell her house in the US and buy something in Belize http://www.expat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=313141#1555214

Just wanted to ask mods or whoever can make it happen, can the title of this thread be changed to Patricia Lynn, she often went by her second name. Thanks

I'm curious as to why a Canadian businesswoman would have such problems entering the US. OK, so she was in a non-marital relationship with an American citizen but she was a semi-retired educated person with a known background, not an undocumented central American illegal immigrant looking to disappear into the black economy.

What gives?

Is there something underlying this that isn't being made public?

I've heard of this happening to other Canadians, for example a professional photographer who decided to spend 6 months travelling US national parks in his RV, and to save money gave up his rental apartment, but he was turned away at the border because he had no home in Canada. Immigration wants to see proof you are just visiting and have ties elsewhere: in particular a permanent address somewhere else. Problem was likely that she'd given up her home in Canada, and wasn't cautious about what she'd said to immigration. It may have actually been her plan to live most of the time in Florida and once they became suspicious of her intentions, she was flagged in the system to refuse her entry. With her own home and an American partner, it would be too easy to open US bank accounts and use his healthcare plan, do everythring thru his citizenship, and just live on there (the level of wealth and education don't matter, Immmigration assumes everyone wants to sneak in to the US).

One more article I wish to discuss:

April 21, 2014 Widower warns after Belize murder http://www.cbc.ca/player/play/2450969997

CBC Interview with Patricia Lynn’s partner David Dorenzo, 6 months after her killing.
I feel more like we are the criminals and the criminal’s a good guy. They will not talk to me, they will not release our valuables…I believe Patricia was targeted, I have no evidence or proof but based on her discussion in the forums and telling people to “spend time before you buy” was anathema to developers there who were trying to persuade people to buy immediately off the web…I am upset because I don’t believe whoever did this will ever be caught and if there are money interests behind this, obviously they will never be caught.”
The end of the video isn’t available, the file’s been corrupted. This is why I wanted to quote the story, before it disappears.

The CBC “journalists” who covered this story were so intent on flogging the familiar scary story about what will happen to Canadians if they dare to go to places like Belize, they missed a pretty obvious, statistically-driven reality: over half of all women murdered are killed by their intimate partner. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2017/07/homicides-women/534306/

I have yet to see any statistics showing how many women, after commenting about real estate on web forums, have been murdered by real estate developers. Anyone who is tempted to believe this allegation should go on the Expat.com forum I linked above and review her posts. She had opinions, but she expressed them fairly and respectfully.

I think if she'd been murdered under the same circumstances in Canada, police would be very much looking at her partner as a potentially “bad guy” (and would refuse to release her valuables to him until he returned to Canada for questioning), and CBC news would be very unlikely to air his theory that she was murdered by Vancouver real estate developers, who are equally intent on selling over-priced real estate, to people who can barely afford it, based on a dream.

But all you have to do is say “Belize” and many people’s common sense understanding/hunches about crimes are clouded by prejudices: irrationally violent criminals; corrupt police; all-powerful real estate cartels.

I believe David Dorenzo really means it when he states “I don’t believe whoever did this will ever be caught”.
