A former Los Angeles priest who was spared child molestation charges in 2003 by a U.S. Supreme Court ruling was arrested Thursday on suspicion of lewd acts with a child, officials said.
Michael Stephen Baker, 58, was jailed on $1 million bail and was expected to be arraigned next week, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Dan Scott.
"We expect charges with multiple counts of lewd acts upon a child, ranging from fondling up to major sex acts," Scott said.
Authorities said in October they had reopened a case that involved two brothers who claimed Baker molested them between 1984 and 1999.
Thursday's arrest involved one of those brothers, said Scott, who declined to elaborate.
Cardinal Roger Mahony removed Baker from the ministry in 2000 when the archdiocese reached a confidential settlement with the two brothers who now live in Mexico. He didn't notify police of their allegations until 2003.
