I am wondering about this missing person:
Susan Swendell missing from MN in 1988
http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/343dfmn.html

Jane doe had no cavities or fillings and the missing young woman from MN had extensive dental work. That could be cosmetic, though, and not cavities. Would that be considered the same? I thought maybe they just took xrays of Jane Doe and found no cavities or fillings. The bottom of doenetwork's page for jane doe has link to real photos of jane doe. She really resembles Susan Swendell from MN in the face. Wondered what others thought...

Here is what I think:

<modsnip>
Jane Doe on left and right, Susan Anne Swedell center (2) pics

1. Since this is a sketch of the victim (not a reconstruction) the features such as nose, lips and ears are reliable. The resemblence is very strong.

2. Jane Doe was found Feb 14, 1988, Susan disappeared January 19, 1988. Since Jane Doe was found within hours of her death, it would mean she would have been held, for almost a month, if this was Susan.

3. Jane Doe is estimated to be in her 20s, Susan would have been 20 in February - Match **See note below

4. Jane Doe is estimated to be 5'3"-Susan was listed at 5'4"-to me a difference of an inch is still a Match

5. Jane Doe is estimated to have weighed 100 lbs, Susan is listed as weighing 105 lbs - Match

6. Jane Doe is listed as blonde with hazel eyes, Susan is listed as Sandy/brown hair with hazel eyes - Match

7. Jane Doe had no dental work and Susan had extensive dental work - discrepancy. It is possible that Susan had Orthodontic work done on her teeth and that's the extensive work. If that's the case and the braces were removed it is possible that her teeth would appear like Jane Doe's with no cavities or fillings. Please see note at the bottom of this post for more info.

8. Jane Doe was found in Vernon, New York and Susan disappeared from Lake Elmo, Minnesota. The two locations are 1,113 mi (about 19 hours 19 mins) apart according to google maps. Considering the almost one month delay its posssible that this distance could have been traversed in the time.

Note: The information about Susan's dental work only appears on the Doe Network and the Charley Project sites. Its the same wording.

All other sites I could find, including the source document for the Doe Network posting, does not mention dental work.

Because of this piece of information, I suspect someone, from the Doe Network, has already suggested Susan as a match (to this Jane Doe or another unidentified person) and that's when the Doe Network found out about her dentals, so they updated her page on their site. Its just speculation on my part though, as I'm not a Doe Network member so I can't say for sure.

Interesting that the "Cold Case" Source file lists Jane Doe as 19-23 and the Doe Network says "in her twenties".
Other than the dental information its a terrific match.

If you put it side by side with the morgue photo, the bridge of the nose seem to be of a very similiar size, and their noses seem almost identical. I think the lighting in the photo of Susan, gives the effect of a wider bridge.

Not trying to argue the point, just expressing my opinion.

Me too, that's why they call it a "discussion" :)

Maybe the slight unibrow thing is making the nose appear narrow to me.

Either way it can't hurt to submit it. Better to rule out than to ignore.

If you go down to the bottom of her Doe site, where it lists resources, there is a link that will take you to a site that has post-mortem photos (3 of them) to give you a better idea of what she really looked like. They're pretty graphic, though.

How about this girl?
Jennifer Lynn Pandos http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/376dfva.html

The thing is, the Jane Doe has a very distincitive eyebrow that goes right down to her nose and almost meets in the middle. I wonder if her blonde hair was dyed?

A couple of nights ago, I was combing through the Charley archive to try to find possibles for DoeNet Case 51UFNY.

http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/51ufny.html

Unidentified White Female
Located on February 14, 1988 in Mount Vernon, Westchester County, New York -- Cause of death was homicide. The victim died of asphyxiation; she also had blunt force trauma to her head.

After looking at the possibles I seized on the profile of Susan Anne Swedell.

When I did a WS forum search to see if she had already been considered, I found that someone else had already discussed the comparison, but there was no mention of whether it was submitted.

http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35295&highlight=Swedell

So I called the Mt Vernon NY PD to find out if she had been considered. The detective indicated that he had never heard of the name Susan Swedell, and was very excited to get a new lead. He said that he has been banging his head against the wall on this case for months, and everything else has hit a dead-end.

He went on to say that much of the evidence on this case has been lost, but they still have the victim's fingernails from which they were just recently able to obtain DNA profiles both on the victim and the possible perp. He also said that he was certain that the victim was not from the area.

To make this even more exciting, I see that there is a reward of up to $25K for information leading to the resolution of Ms. Swedell's disappearance.

I am surprised given the monetary incentive, that someone on the WS board didn't already call this in.

The timing is right, and though the JD is a little taller, they look quite similar. I would say the main difference is that Susan had extensive dental work, the JD hadn't had any.

I wonder if there are any morgue photos that might give a better idea of what she looked like?

Thanks - The dental issue certainly would be an inconsistency, and I would suspect that "significant dental work" would include fillings or reconstructions.

But as for height, the UID is 5'3", and SAS is 5'4". That is a negligible difference.

Since I didn't see any mention on this board that Susan Swedell was ever submitted, I called it in. They indicated that they had not received this possible yet, but they called me back after looking into it and indicated it was not a match.

Yeah, sorry about that, I misread the UID as 5' even.

thanks, snuf, for the morgue photo -- the drawing is quite accurate.

After seeing the postmortem, I thought that the eyes on the drawing were wrong.

The drawing doesn't catch the strong slant of her eyes down towards the ears and high towards the nose.

I started fooling around with the postmortem photo in Corel Photopaint and did a recon of my own.

I was going off the mention of two weeks' growth of hair to figure she had disappeared in late January some time, and discovered that Doe and Charleyproject only list a handful of women missing, most of them in other countries. There's a woman from Canada with red hair and a similar face, but she's too old, too tall, and her eyes are the wrong color...

I see some resemblance here but am not sure about the eyes---the slant or the color. The Does eyes were said to be hazel- Catherine's eyes are blue.I can't tell if Catherine has freckles. Her height and weight are close.

There are some good similarities, but the eyes and eyebrows look off to me, and Jane Does jawline is sharper and lower.

Pretty close though, don't let me dissuade you from calling it in if you think you have a match.

Hey, you missed your calling Carl, you ol' bean counter you!! LOL Very nice. Now, am I mistaken or is there a pretty prominent mole on the JD's right cheek?

Side by side -- wow, yeah, that is a startling resemblance.
