Cold case detectives launch a fresh hunt for serial killer

‘By the time Homicide arrived at the unmade road it was already a cold trail - but now, 37 years later, police have a million reasons to believe they may catch a serial killer suspected of murdering six women taken from Melbourne streets.

It is perhaps Victoria's most baffling murder mystery - six females, aged from 14 to 73, all grabbed seemingly at random in an 18-month period and dumped in scrub. All were on foot when abducted from or near main roads - all but one in broad daylight.

In each case experts could not establish a cause of death and personal items had been removed from the victims, either to conceal identity or to be kept as trophies by the killer.

By the time the first body was found at Tynong North, on December 6, 1980, the killer had struck five times – if, that is, there was only one murderer.

There were several homicide investigations, followed by a taskforce probe, Canadian and US crime profile examinations and two criminal intelligence reviews. More than 2000 people were interviewed, 11,400 pages of notes taken and detailed coronial inquests held.

But no charges were laid. Now police will offer a $1 million reward for information they hope will lead to the person or persons responsible for the murders of two women whose bodies were found in Frankston and four found in Tynong North.

Puzzling about Narumol Stephenson. If she was killed by the same person as the other three found at Tynong North, why was her body not with the others? One reason might be that she was only taken there after the three bodies were found, and the place having been made a "crime scene" was no longer appropriate--covering scrub removed or police present. Or, seeing that she wasn't found for over two years, she might have had another killer who decided to link her with the others by taking her body out that way.

How does one disappear from a car? Was she sleeping in the car? Was she about to drive somewhere but the car wouldn't start?

Police offer $6 million reward to catch Tynong North serial killer

UPDATED ABOUT 2 HOURS AGO (as at 16:00 AEDT 21 October 2017)

‘The loved ones of six women who were murdered in a string of killings in the 1980s have spoken of their anguish, as Victoria Police offer an unprecedented $6 million worth of rewards to find the serial killer responsible.

Police hope the six $1 million rewards will help them find the person responsible for the murders of the women killed in what was known at the time as the Tynong North murders.

The women were killed between May 1980 and November 1981, with the victims aged between 14 and 73 years old.

Police said all the women were on foot when they were taken, with the majority intending to take public transport.

Their bodies were found hidden in scrubland at Frankston, in bayside Melbourne, and at Tynong North, south-east of Melbourne, and the offender tried to hide their identities by taking their personal items.’

I’m quite new to these murders so I have only just started to research them. DI Mick Hughes did mention Narumol Stephenson here. It seems as if the link is the timeframe and proximity to other dump sites.

There is a roam so to speak preying, a sort you encounter with the meekest of manner.

An evil person, only dna to stop him as the illness never ends.

I pray for those he has taken.

From above wiki link

Days before Glover finally committed suicide, he handed his last outside visitor a sketch of a park. Glover pointed out two pine trees. In the middle of the right pine tree, the number "nine" could be seen between leaves and branches. The number nine is said to either represent the total number of murders or the number of unsolved murders committed by Glover.[SUP][12][/SUP]
Unsolved murders that may have been committed by Glover include:[SUP][11][/SUP]

  1. Emmie May Anderson, 78, East Melbourne (19 October 1961)
  2. Irene Kiddle, 61, St Kilda (22 March 1963)
  3. Elsie Boyes, 63, Prahran (3 June 1967)
  4. Christina Yankos, 63, Albert Park (9 April 1968)
  5. Florence Broadhurst, 78, Paddington (16 October 1977)
  6. Josephine McDonald, 72, Ettalong (29 August 1984)
  7. Wanda Amundsen, 83, Umina (21 November 1986)

Just for interest sake for now, I’m bringing this MSM article over from another thread. He is reported as being in his 50s now, which would make him aged approximately in his 20s then.

He drove the woman to Starling Rd in Officer where he allegedly sexually assaulted her.

The man is described as caucasian, aged in his 50s, with a medium build and sandy hair which was short on the sides and curly on the top. He told the victim that he lived in Warragul.’

Great map courtesy of dotr on another thread:

The geographical aspect is interesting. Thinking about the presumed pick-up sites and the three co-located Tynong North victims, main routes connect Glen Iris to the Berwick/Narre Warren-Fountain Gate areas and then the latter to Cranbourne. Bertha Miller would probably have been going to take a tram along High Street; the Monash Freeway passes under High Street but there are other main roads alternative to the freeway which take much the same route. Chadstone shopping centre is near Glen Iris which might be something to take notice of as Fountain Gate has been mentioned. Then from the Berwick area out to Tynong North is straight along the Princes Highway to the Brew Road turnoff.

Has anyone picked up which bus stop Joy Summers was at, and where Allison Rooke would have been catching transport from?

Wow, so the two Frankston pick-up points are on the same road about one and a half kilometres apart. If you're driving towards Frankston along that Frankston-Dandenong Road, you come to Skye Road which turns around and takes you away from Frankston again, and intersects with McClelland Drive. And the bodies were found, one near McClelland Drive and the other near Skye Road.
