This is the Babcock murder trial discussion thread.

A few general reminders about the trial:

Any testimony that might remain under Publication Ban, and/or any courtroom discussion that takes place when the jury is not present, is strictly off-limits.

Only testimony that is published through MSM reporting (newspaper articles, tweets, tv) is allowed. Provide a source link, and keep discussion focused on testimony as it becomes public knowledge.

The magnificent principle of “innocent until proven guilty” is for the court room … it is not required that the general public / Websleuths members adhere to that principle. Members are allowed to discuss, speculate, theorize, and judge according to opinions they develop from following the specifics of the case.

A few general reminders from Websleuths TOS aka The Rules.

At all times, remain VICTIM FRIENDLY. No bashing or passing judgment on the victim or family.

There is ZERO TOLERANCE for snarky or disrespectful posts. Don’t expect an explanation … you will find your post has simply disappeared, or that you can no longer post.

There is to be NO name calling or name variations, not even of the accused.

BICKERING between members is not allowed. If you disagree, that's fine, say so and move past the post. If a post is offensive, alert it and let the Mods review it. If you respond to the post, both the offensive post AND yours will be removed and may result in other consequences.

Alert on a post and move on without discussing it, and don't question the decisions of our Mods/Admin or Owner. Also do not expect personalized responses with explanations about a particular decision.

Do not abuse the WS Alert feature. Abuse includes, but is not limited to:
• Overuse of the alert system
• Repeatedly alerting on the same poster
• Demanding a specific outcome
• Alerting on the same post more than once

If you have any questions, use the Alert feature or send a PM and we will be happy to assist.

Accused killer's friend breaks down in witness box at Laura Babcock murder trial

By Shannon Martin, CBC News Oct 26, 2017

Clayton Babcock, Laura's father, was in tears Monday as he told the courtroom about his daughter, an avid reader who was always the life of the party. (Pam Davies/CBC)

A friend of accused killer Mark Smich broke down in tears in the witness box Thursday after the Crown played a video of Smich rapping about burning a body and getting rid of evidence.

"It's just a lot to process," David Cronin, 22, told the jury at the Laura Babcock murder trial being held in Superior Court in Toronto. He paused for a few moments while testifying to gather his composure.

[...]

Cronin testified he'd never seen the 30-second clip of Smich rapping, but the lyrics were the same ones he heard five years ago.

Cronin was just 14 at the time and still in high school. He said he was hanging out with Smich and several other friends in Smich's mother's garage in Oakville, Ont., in August 2012, when Smich made a chilling confession.

Cronin testified Smich said he "killed a girl, burned a body, and disposed of it in a lake.... After that he sang us a rap song about it."

The Crown read the lyrics during opening statements:

Jury to hear from 3 more witnesses at Laura Babcock murder trial
By Shannon Martin, CBC News Posted: Oct 27, 2017

Three more people are expected to step into the witness box Friday at the Laura Babcock murder trial in Toronto, after a week of testimony that's ranged from heartbreaking to chilling.

Dellen Millard, 32, of Toronto, and Mark Smich, 30, of Oakville, Ont., have both pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the death of the 23-year-old woman who lived in Toronto.

A doctor is expected to testify, and so is a young woman who was friends with both Babcock and Christina Noudga, who was dating Millard at the time Babcock disappeared.

Crown asks Wilson if he noticed Babcock was using any medication. He did.

She was using medication to help her sleep, for depression and anxiety.

Wilson says Babcock seemed depressed, not really knowing what she was going to do with her life. She slept alot.

Their arrangement was meant to be temporary. She was going to look for work and a place to live - but he says she didn't appear to.

Lisa Hepfner‏ @HefCHCHNews 43s43 seconds ago
He also saw self inflicted scratches on #Babcock's wrists and forearms. "Minor, like cat scratches," Wilson says.

Lisa Hepfner‏ @HefCHCHNews 26s26 seconds ago
After about two weeks the arrangement came to an end, Wilson says. His friends and family suggested #Babcock wasn't changing her life.

Lisa Hepfner‏ @HefCHCHNews 13s13 seconds ago
Two or three of his friends and family had met #Babcock. Wilson's brother had a music business next door.

Wilson tells jury members about what he learned about her home life. He said there were "some control issues" - so going home wasn't an option for her.

He noticed self inflicted wounds. Scratches on her wrists and forearms. He called them minor, like cat scratches.

Lisa Hepfner‏ @HefCHCHNews 20s20 seconds ago
The next day Wilson got up and #Babcock had "scratched herself to the point of bleeding." She was talking about suicide.

Shannon Martin

Wilson says a couple of his friends and his brother observed Babcock didn't appear to be changing her habits, and suggested he should ask her to leave.

He did.

Wilson says Babcock was in tears, she had nowhere to go. He said she didn't sleep that night. When he woke up, he noticed she'd scratched herself until she bled. She was talking about suicide.

Lisa Hepfner‏ @HefCHCHNews 50s50 seconds ago
Wilson thought #Babcock was trying to make him feel guilty. She didn't say she would kill herself but talked about suicide, he says.

Wilson says #Babcock was not his girlfriend when she stayed at his place. He saw her again after that. Her ex had put her up in a hotel.

marianne boucher‏ @CityCourtsTO 33s33 seconds ago
Wilson says she never spoke of suicide, her self harm, made him feel guilty. Drove her , suitcase and white dog back where he picked her up.

Lisa Hepfner‏ @HefCHCHNews 27s27 seconds ago
We heard Shawn Lerner testify about getting the hotel earlier at trial. Wilson went to the hotel to drop off stuff #Babcock had left behind.

Lisa Hepfner‏ @HefCHCHNews 8s8 seconds ago

He saw her one other time after she left his place, at a hotel where her former boyfriend - Shawn Lerner - was paying for her to stay. Wilson dropped off some of her belongings. A pillow and some clothing. He says she seemed "alright."

Crown has concluded his questions.
