‘A West Australian woman who bravely rescued a five-year-old girl swept out to sea in a kayak off a local beach has been hailed a hero by emergency services.

Police said five-year-old Noema Sampson was with friends paddling in shallow water close to shore in a kayak at the dog beach at Augusta, on the south-west coast of Western Australia, on Wednesday afternoon when she was hit by a strong current.

Augusta Police first class constable Brett Dillon said the current quickly took hold of the kayak about 1.30pm and, with a strong offshore wind blowing, Noema headed to sea at a staggering rate.

Constable Dillon said 25-year-old Joella Enderes, who saw what had happened, swam out to reach the girl who was 500 metres [about 550 yards] offshore.

When Ms Enderes reached Noema she jumped into the kayak and paddled her safely back to shore.

Marine Rescue Augusta volunteer Phil Tubb said emergency services were called and rushed to the scene however, he believed they would have been too late if not for Ms Enderes' intervention.

"After many calls our group managed to get to the scene but what occurred prior to that is the stuff of miracles," he said.

Mr Tubb said Ms Enderes was working a waitressing shift at the Colour Patch Cafe, when she heard what was going on and ran to the scene.

"She stripped off, dived into the cold water and swam at least 500 metres to the kayak and brought the girl back to the shore with endurance that is very difficult given the conditions," he said.

"As it happened, all are safe and well, but if it was not for Ms Enderes, I think this young girl may not be alive today."‘
