This is the Babcock murder trial discussion thread.

A few general reminders about the trial:

Any testimony that might remain under Publication Ban, and/or any courtroom discussion that takes place when the jury is not present, is strictly off-limits.

Only testimony that is published through MSM reporting (newspaper articles, tweets, tv) is allowed. Provide a source link, and keep discussion focused on testimony as it becomes public knowledge.

The magnificent principle of “innocent until proven guilty” is for the court room … it is not required that the general public / Websleuths members adhere to that principle. Members are allowed to discuss, speculate, theorize, and judge according to opinions they develop from following the specifics of the case.

A few general reminders from Websleuths TOS aka The Rules.

At all times, remain VICTIM FRIENDLY. No bashing or passing judgment on the victim or family.

There is ZERO TOLERANCE for snarky or disrespectful posts. Don’t expect an explanation … you will find your post has simply disappeared, or that you can no longer post.

There is to be NO name calling or name variations, not even of the accused.

BICKERING between members is not allowed. If you disagree, that's fine, say so and move past the post. If a post is offensive, alert it and let the Mods review it. If you respond to the post, both the offensive post AND yours will be removed and may result in other consequences.

Alert on a post and move on without discussing it, and don't question the decisions of our Mods/Admin or Owner. Also do not expect personalized responses with explanations about a particular decision.

Do not abuse the WS Alert feature. Abuse includes, but is not limited to:
• Overuse of the alert system
• Repeatedly alerting on the same poster
• Demanding a specific outcome
• Alerting on the same post more than once

A retired OPP officer, described by the judge at the Laura Babcock murder as "undoubtedly the most substantial witness of the trial," began testifying on Tuesday afternoon in Ontario Superior Court in Toronto.

"This is a big, long, complex body of evidence," Justice Michael Code warned the jury. "He'll be on the stand for a couple of days."

Jim Falconer, a former detective, will be testifying about all the electronic data that was seized from devices connected to accused killers Dellen Millard, 32, of Toronto, and Mark Smich, 30, of Oakville, Ont.

[...]

From the witness box, Falconer described for the jury some of the things that were discovered on the electronic devices found in the homes of the two accused, including a Steam online gaming account associated with Millard, Word documents associated with aviation company MillardAir, as well as resumés for Millard's then-girlfriend Christina Noudga, and Smich's then-girlfriend Marlena Meneses.

He studied those backups, instead of the original files on the devices themselves.
by Adam Carter 9:40 AM

Falconer is explaining the backups he made of each device seized from Millard's home.

I find CN to be despicable, but come on, it’s a Halloween costume...

Ya but to wear the costume of a fictitious psychopathic murderous girlfriend who runs the criminal empire of her psychopathicly insane boyfriend while he is in prison just months after her real life boyfriend was been charged and jailed for the horrific murder of an innocent family man?? And then have the pic smuggled to him in prison despite a no contact order?? Come on..

Falconer is now describing the two types of software he used to "validate" the data found on the devices from Millard's home.
by Adam Carter 9:44 AM

He's still more so describing the ins and outs of the process, rather than any of the data itself. This step is a bit dry, but essential for this kind of evidence.

Any help with the tweets is greatly appreciated

I'm sorry, all! I thought court started at 10! I'm here to do the live blog, standby!

The phone named "Dell's iPhone" was an iPhone 3GS.
by Adam Carter 9:46 AM

Falconer says the data found on that phone had not been encrypted.

One phone was named "Dell's iPhone," Falconer says. Version 3Gs. It has a particular serial number associated with it. No encryption in the backup. #LauraBabcock

Falconer is describing the software that allows him to examine the contents of a seized device. He's explaining the information we see in his "extraction report." #LauraBabcock

Falconer looked for "salutations" used when people sent messages to the phone. "Overwhelmingly, it was Dell, Dellen, and in one case Dillon, misspelled." No other names that he found, other than nicknames. No, "Hi, Tony!" Further confirmation he had Dellen #Millard's phone.

Falconer's presentation says SMS messages found on this phone backup ranged from Feb. 2010 to Feb. 2011. There were "thousands" of messages on the phone, he says.
by Adam Carter 9:50 AM

He says that there were "regular occurrences" to references of "Dell, Dellen or Dillon."

andreww, I can post the Tweets as well, if you'd like. It's just as easy for me to do both. But if you want to continue, please do :)

Falconer now describing how iTunes works when it comes to iPhone backups. Might seem basic for some, but again integral in case some people in the courtroom don't understand.
