SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas - A man who opened fire in a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, is dead, police say.

A witness reported seeing a man walk into First Baptist Church and began shooting around 11:30 a.m.

Police said there are "multiple victims" at the church, but have not said how many.
The church is located in the 500 block of 4th Street in the small, south Texas town about 40 miles east of San Antonio.

Multiple witnesses told CBS affiliate KENS that several people were shot at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs.

Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt told the Wilson County News that a man entered the church and opened fire. Tackitt said there were multiple casualties and fatalities.

Dana Fletcher, a business owner in the area, told CBS News she saw a "ton" of sheriff's vehicles and ambulances racing down the road. She said she doesn't know what happened but said there was heavy police presence and people were being airlifted from the scene.

A witness told KSAT that a man walked into the church about 11:30 a.m. Sunday and opened fire at the crowd of people. The church holds morning worship services at 11 a.m., according to its website.

Constable Thomas Silvas from Precinct 1 in Wilson County confirmed to Fox News there was a "mass shooting" situation and that officials were working on removing the bodies from the church, but did not specify the number of people who were dead or wounded.

'Mass shooting' reported at small town church in Texas

A gunman opened fire at a church in Texas during Sunday services, resulting in multiple reported casualties.
The attack happened at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs in Wilson County.

Local ABC affiliate KSAT 12 reported the gunman entered the church at around 11:30 local time and began shooting.
Police told the outlet there were "multiple victims" and the gunman had been killed in the aftermath. The
number of casualties is not yet clear.

Photos and video from the scene showed the area taped off by local law enforcement.
A number of helicopters have arrived to transport the wounded, KSAT 12 reporter Max Massey said.

No, not for a long time. They're often targets, and in a recent church shooting one of the parishioners was armed.
 
Neighbors say they heard shooter may have reloaded multiple times, around 50 people usually at service
