Startling new information was revealed in court Wednesday about the slaying of a retired Philadelphia police officer.

Detectives said that the accused killer, Galvinus Thompson (pictured, left), has confessed, claiming the man he killed was a child molester.

During an hour of testimony, a detective said that Kenneth Brokenborough was shot to death because Thompson believed he had raped a young member of Thompson's family seven years ago.

Police also said that Thompson, 24, confessed he went to Brokenborough's home on Friday Jan. 13 to confront him with the rape allegations, but Thompson lost his courage. The detective went on to say that Thompson returned three days later, on Monday Jan. 16, and confronted Brokenborough while he was exercising and fatally shot him.

The man accused of killing retired police officer Kenneth Brokenborough told cops he pumped 11 bullets into his mother's former boyfriend because Brokenborough allegedly raped his sister.
"Last week, she told me that Kenneth had raped her," Galvinus Thompson said in his confession that was read in court yesterday. "She said that she was 7 years old when it happened. That's all she would say to me."
The motive, if true, could make a compelling case for a voluntary manslaughter conviction against Thompson, a significant improvement over the first-degree murder charge prosecutors are seeking for the Jan. 16 shooting.
Yesterday, Thompson, 23, of Lodge Road near Leroy Street in Roxborough, was ordered held for court on general murder charges.

Brokenborough once dated Thompson's mother, Dana Thompson, a police officer assigned to the mayor's security detail. The couple broke up, but Galvinus stayed in touch with Brokenborough.
Some sources familiar with the investigation, however, doubt that Brokenborough ever assaulted Thompson's younger sister. The true motive for the slaying, they said, arose from a financial dispute between Brokenborough and Dana Thompson.

At one point, Vega told Municipal Judge James DeLeon that no formal police complaint ever was made - even by the Philly-cop mother - about the rape allegation. Homicide Detective Dominic Mangoni said that since the slaying, Thompson's sister has been interviewed about the alleged sexual assault. Details of that interview were not read into testimony yesterday.
Vega also said that Dana Thompson initially lied to homicide detectives by denying that her son owned a BMW, the type of car seen leaving the crime scene. She admitted to it, he said, only after being confronted by homicide detectives.
