SOUTH PLAINFIELD -- A borough truck driver who went to Florida to work on a hurricane cleanup effort has been reported missing by authorities, police and family members said Wednesday night.

Kenneth R. Conceicao, 35, was last seen Jan. 20 in Boca Raton, Fla., South Plainfield police Chief John Ferraro said. Conceicao, who was driving a truck for an independent contractor, was picking up a load of mulch on Military Parkway and Butt Trail about 6 p.m.

He was scheduled to drive 75 miles away to deliver the load to Ocalante Powerplant, but he never arrived, said his girlfriend, Melissa Glick of South Plainfield.

Conceicao also never showed up at a rest stop where he was supposed to meet a friend, Ferraro said.

Glick last spoke to her boyfriend about 5:20 that night and reported him missing a day later.

A water management crew manning a backhoe at the New River Canal next to State Road 27 near South Bay had scraped some metal under the water.

It turned out to be the truck Kenneth Conceicao had been driving the day he disappeared.

This is sad. The California Aqueduct which transports water from northern to southern CA has claimed the lives of many people who just make wrong turns.
