Sources: LiAngelo Ball, 2 other UCLA players arrested in China

Three UCLA men's basketball players -- including LiAngelo Ball, the younger brother of Los Angeles Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball -- were arrested in China just days before Friday's season-opening game against Georgia Tech in Shanghai, sources told ESPN's Jeff Goodman.

One source told ESPN the group of players -- which also included freshmen Cody Riley and Jalen Hill -- were arrested on shoplifting charges.

The players are being questioned about stealing from a Louis Vuitton store that is located next to the team's hotel.

A source tells ESPN the players are not currently with the team.

This is very tricky right now, politically.

Pres. Trump is in Asia, about to visit China. This is very unfortunate timing for everyone involved.

This was also incredibly stupid behavior by these players, if it is true.

And according to ESPN talk radio, 710, they were caught red handed with the stolen merchandise in their back packs, on the team bus.

Teens do stupid stuff, and this was really dumb. They will likely lose their scholarships, maybe impact their futures in the NBA, and embarrassed themselves, their families and their country.

It also poorly affects the 'take a knee' movement, to have young black American athletes, steal in a foreign country, while on an international ambassador assignment abroad.

This very simple incident may have broad implications...

'not currently with the team' - does that mean they released them from their contracts? in other words, fired?

this will affect their future in college and in basketball

sheer idiocy

Dorial Beckham-Green was released by the University of Missouri Tiger football team after too many marijuana arrests.

Moved on to the NFL.

Right, but if Dorial had been busted in CHINA for doing so, whole different story. Stealing from a Louis Vuitton store could be a felony, if they took expensive merchandise.

And China doesn't play when it comes to felonies committed by foreigners. This could get very messy.

China is an independent, sovereign country. One of the chief attributes of sovereignty is the right of a country to make and enforce laws within its own borders. Just as in the United States of America, the Chinese government has the internationally recognized right to try foreigners as well as its own nationals within its territory.

Anyone who breaks the law in China is subject to prosecution under the Chinese legal system. If a person is convicted and sentenced to imprisonment by a Chinese court, this sentence will be served in a Chinese prison.

While in China one is subject to the same laws as is a Chinese citizen. A U.S. passport does not entitle its bearer to any special privileges. One should not expect to receive preferential treatment or to expect that the same array of legal rights accorded one under the U.S. judicial system are necessarily applicable in China.

The Embassy or Consulate’s Role

The U.S. Embassy/Consulate cannot get you out of jail, accept custody of you, guarantee your appearance in court, post bail for you, act as your legal adviser, or pay your legal fees.

I doubt there's anything in a LV store which isn't expensive. Even the little bitty things like scarves are over £100.

If these young men are guilty of this, I have to say that the coaches or whoever else is on this trip bear some responsibility here. Going to China is not like going to Canada. I have recently returned from China. This is a totally different culture than what these players were used to with very different laws and expectations. This is also a country where Americans are not particularly popular right now. These players should never have been allowed to walk around without knowledgeable escorts/chaperones.

ESPN reported that police came to the team hotel in the city of Hangzhou early Tuesday morning to apprehend the student-athletes, who were reportedly not allowed to speak to coaches. They have reportedly been accused of stealing sunglasses from a Louis Vuitton store next to the hotel.

LiAngelo Ball and his teammates could face as much as three to 10 years in prison if convicted of the crime. The players may also be detained for more than a month, without access to an American-style bail hearing, while local prosecutors determine whether to bring charges. The three players will not be allowed to leave their hotel in Hangzhou until the legal process is over.

“I would say they could be in quite a bit of trouble if they have solid proof that they shoplifted,” Amnesty International’s William Nee, an expert on the Chinese court system, told Yahoo Sports. “However, part of it will depend on whether their lawyers, the university, or the U.S. consulate can advocate and negotiate on their behalf.”

Reportedly, the 3 have been released bail, but are not allowed to leave their hotel until the legal matters are resolved. The rest of the team has moved on to the next town.

Ball's father LaVar, who is in China, released a statement on social media naming the players.

"Ball, Riley and Hill are being required by Hangzhou police to remain at their hotel until the legal process is over, which could take days, weeks or even months," he said. "The hope is obviously sooner rather than later."

I just looked at LV sunglasses online. They seem to be priced from 400 to 900 American Dollars.

It is not good to get arrested in China.

No. My daughter flew through Hong Kong on her way to Vietnam for a study abroad session last winter. I wasn't with her when she packed her bags, but she neglected to take out a small can of MACE from her backpack that she carries with her here in the US. When changing terminals in HK and going through security in China it was found in her bag (it wasn't detected before her flight out of the US). She said that the police were very tough, hinted at an arrest but somehow (with the help and pleading of a travelling professor) she got out of China with a warning and a write-up.

Say, maybe a trade for Brendt Christensen of Champaign-Urbana???

You all don't understand. College athletes are gods and not expected to behave like the rest of us. There might be a slap on the wrist for show, but they'll be playing ball by the time the season starts.

If it happened in the US I would tend to agree with you but I don't think college basketball athletes have much leverage in China.

However, I do wonder if the story is true. All three of them stole sunglasses? In China? Awfully stupid if it's true!

I know it sounds weird. But Louis Vuitton designer sunglasses cost between 400 and 900 American Dollars. I am not sure what they cost in China.

But LV sunglasses are quite the rage among many young people. A lot of rappers wear them cuz they are expensive.

There was a LV store right next to the Hotel the team was staying in. I think it was just a matter of them walking around and exploring a bit and seeing the store right there.

It is hard to believe they would steal something, being so visible and noticeable in China. They were each about 6 foot 10 inches tall! lol

It would be awfully stupid. But according to an embedded journalist, with the Georgia Tech team, the police were called by the store owners, who reported the thefts. And there are supposedly tapes. And, worst of all, they reportedly found the stolen merchandise among the players belongings.

Sure, they could be planted. But I really doubt it.

Seriously, they couldn’t have picked a store here in the US where they would just get their hands slapped and sent back to play, they had to go out of country to steal, and they chose China!!!! Really REALLY stupid of them.
