Mexico - Juana Barraza accused of killing 16 elderly women, 2002-2006
POSTED: 3:11 pm EST January 26, 2006
MEXICO CITY -- Mexico City police have in custody two alleged serial killers -- one, a female former professional wrestler suspected in the deaths of ten elderly women; the other, a 29-year-old man accused of luring homosexuals away bars and killing them.
The news was shocking to a city accustomed to crime, but which rarely sees serial killings.
Police said the former Mexican soldier would torture his victims before hanging them, and even carved a star into the forehead of one man.
Wednesday, police detained former professional wrestler Juana Barraza, saying she'd been captured while fleeing a house where an 82-year-old woman had been strangled with a stethoscope.
Mexico City Attorney General Bernardo Batiz said Barraza has been linked to the deaths of at least ten elderly Mexico City women.

From April 2008:
A single mother who nursed ambitions to be a professional masked wrestler has been sentenced to 759 years in jail for killing 16 elderly women in Mexico City.
Dubbed the Mataviejitas, or Little Old Lady Killer, Juana Barraza was arrested in January 2006 after she was seen hurrying from the house of her last victim, the only murder she has confessed to...
Profilers believe she killed elderly women to release the rage she harboured against her alcoholic mother, who gave her away at the age of 12 to a man who abused her.
