launched a huge search-and-rescue operation

operation was officially upgraded to search-and-rescue status Friday. But poor weather conditions have made it difficult for the Navy to locate the missing vessel, Reuters reported.

Poseidon is expected to aid in the search because its technology allows it “to support a wide range of missions over large bodies of water, including sub-surface search-and-rescue operations,”

It is thought that the submarine may have had communication difficulties caused by a power cut. Navy protocol dictates that a vessel should come to the surface if communication has been lost.

emergency operation was formally upgraded to a search-and-rescue procedure on Friday evening after no visual or radar contact was made with the submarine.

The German-built submarine, which uses diesel-electric propulsion, was inaugurated in 1983, making it the newest of the three submarines in the navy's fleet, according to the navy.

ABc confirming there was a fire on board Wed

time (air) running out

no visual or radar returns (that kinda makes sense tho with no power )

id dont know tho --how does a sub release ballast without power??

aircraft has 21 crew members

german built 1983

crew family been in contact

Hi C, I'm confused. There was a fire before they lost contact?

Hi

yes it sounds like they had electrical issue that resulted in a fire and knocked out communication

but like in the air fire down there is a really bad deal

Argentina: Missing navy submarine tried contacting bases

A missing Argentine submarine attempted to contact naval bases via satellite seven times, but communication with the vessel was not established, the nation's defense ministry said.

The calls came to different bases between 10:52 a.m. and 3:42 p.m. Saturday, and lasted between four and 36 seconds, the ministry said in a statement to CNN en Español.

I have some hope still but it doesn't look good.

Interesting that (if I recall), Mar Del Plata was where some German U-boats surrendered after they'd been roaming the Atlantic after Germany had surrendered in early May of 1945. One was suspected of sinking an Allied ship in July of 1945 after Germany was supposed to be out of the war. The last known German U-boat didn't surrender at Mar Del Plata until several days after Japan surrendered in late August of 1945.

scary

they would have survival gear on board right? like could they be afloat somewhere in a dinghy? forgive me if that sounds naive ... I know nothing about submarines/ocean survival

I don't know for sure but i think they are like aviation pressurized .

I dont think they could open the hatch and if it crushed i think coming up would kill them (bends)..

Search for Missing Argentine Submarine Raises Grim Scenarios

— As search teams raced against time, and stormy seas, to find a missing Argentine submarine, officials said on Sunday that earlier hopeful reports that the crew might have tried to make satellite calls in recent days appeared to be wrong.

The grimmest alternative is that the submarine sank as a result of a catastrophic event such as an explosion or fire. If the crew survived such an event, those onboard could conceivably have enough oxygen for several days after it went under, according to an Argentine Navy official who was not authorized to speak on the record.

If it is flailing on the surface, and the crew manages to weather the storm, the sailors would have enough fresh water and food to last for about 25 days, the official said.

id dont know tho --how does a sub release ballast without power??

I believe they have emergency valves that can be turned manually. The valve then sends a gas into the ballast tanks that forces the water out.

The submarine being able to surface, however, is contingent on none of the internal compartments being flooded. Because they are designed to well... sink, submarines do not have a lot of reserve buoyancy. This means it does not take a relatively large amount of extra weight to hold them under the water.

I hope we can send more than one search plane. What is really troubling is that submarines have emergency marking buoys (also send out raid signals) that are sent up in even sudden emergencies. As the emergency buoys were not activated, this could imply a catastrophic accident.

Argentina missing submarine: Specialist equipment deployed

Specialist underwater rescue equipment has arrived in Argentina from the United States to help hunt for an Argentine submarine which vanished last Wednesday with 44 crew on board.

More boats and planes have also joined the search, which has been hampered by heavy winds and high waves.

The Argentina navy says ARA San Juan has enough supplies for at least two weeks.

The vessel disappeared 430km (267 miles) off the Argentine coast.
