Terminally-ill cancer patient, 62, who was lifelong smoker died when she blew herself up by lighting cigarette while using oxygen tank

A terminally-ill cancer patient who was a lifelong smoker died when she 'blew herself up' by lighting a cigarette while using an oxygen tank, an inquest heard.

Sharon Reid, 62, was receiving treatment for her terminal lung cancer at St Margaret's Hospice in Yeovil when the tragedy occurred on September 17 last year.

The medical officer at the hospice recalled how 'her body had been thrown backwards in the chair' and was 'badly charred'.

Wow, an employee of this "health care facility" who knew nothing of the dangers of smoking and oxygen use actually transported the woman and her oxygen tank to a smoking room within the facility!

Most UK hospices have non-medically trained support staff and volunteers who wouldn't necessarily know about smoking and oxygen.

She was likely spared a worse death.

My MIL is currently in hospice for COPD. For years she smoked with her oxygen on.... When anyone would say anything about her blowing up she'd seriously respond, "and that would be a bad thing?"

Just her opinion.... And she 100% takes responsibility for her actions....
