Few Survive After Ship Carrying 1,300 Sinks

Yeah, I don't get it with these ferries....it seems that a lot of them capsize especially in rough weather. They say it did send out a distress call that was picked up by the French (they would know! ;)) and then the French passed it along to the Egyptians.

What's really going to be a shame is if more people drown because Israeli help was turned down. How about that.....they hate someone so bad because of their religion that they would be unwilling to accept help.

Britain sent a ship but it will be a day and a half away.

Sad on top of sad.

The news said that the captain was the first one off of the ship. The families of the deceased will get something like $5200 from the government. The survivors will get half of that amount. Can you imagine the lawsuits if that happened here in this country. Lives aren't worth much there.

Apparently there was a fire that started shortly after they pulled away from port, and they chose to keep going.

Series of Tragic Errors Doomed Egypt Ferry

SAFAGA, Egypt - The series of tragic errors that apparently claimed more than 1,000 lives on an Egyptian ferry escalated when the crew decided to push across the Red Sea despite the fire burning in the aging vessel's parking bay, survivors said Saturday. The Al-Salaam Boccaccio 98 had sailed only about 20 miles from the Saudi shore, but its crew instead tried to reach Egypt's shores 110 miles away. Only 376 survivors had been rescued by late Saturday.

"We told the crew, 'Let's turn back, let's call for help,' but they refused and said everything was under control," said passenger Ahmed Abdel Wahab, 30, an Egyptian who works in Saudi Arabia. Passengers began panicking, and crew members locked up some women in their cabins, Wahab and another survivor said, though many others being treated in Safaga hospitals Saturday said that was not true.
