Pharmaceutical giant Barry Sherman and his wife Honey Sherman were found dead in a home in Toronto’s York Mills neighbourhood on Friday afternoon, sources confirm.

Emergency crews responded to a 9-1-1 medical call at a house located at 50 Old Colony Road, which is in the area of Bayview Avenue and Highway 401.
Firefighters, officers and paramedics arrived on scene just before 12 p.m. and located two bodies inside.
Barry Sherman was the chairman of generic drug company Apotex Inc. He and his wife were well known Toronto philanthropists.

Canadian Business magazine recently listed Barry Sherman as the 15th richest person in Canada, with a net worth of $4.77 billion.

Speaking to reporters in front of the home, Const. David Hopkinson said the victims’ deaths are being treated as suspicious at this time.

“The circumstances of their deaths appear suspicious and we are treating it that way,” he said. “Our investigators are inside (the home) investigating and taking apart the scene.”

Dr. Eric Hoskins, Ontario's Minister of Health and Long Term Care, tweeted: "I am beyond words right now. My dear friends Barry and Honey Sherman have been found dead. Wonderful human beings, incredible philanthropists, great leaders in health care. A very, very sad day. Barry, Honey, rest in peace."

Mr. Feldman said family members had told him that Mr. Sherman had not been at work on Thursday, and that no one had heard from his wife that day, either.
"We don't know what happened. A family member got information and called me. … We don't want to interfere with a police investigation, but on the other hand the kinfolk want to know about their kinfolk."
An Apotex spokesperson said they had just learned the news and would not be commenting immediately.

Unsure if this should have been put in the crimes in the news section at this point, deaths are presently being treated as suspicious but homicide not called in thus far, imo.rbbm.

Toronto police said they got a 911 call around 11:45 a.m. about a medical incident at a house on Old Colony Road, near Highway 401 and Bayview Avenue, and found the bodies there.

Const. David Hopkinson said police are treating the deaths as suspicious until they know exactly how the people died.
He said the coroner and pathologist have been called in, but homicide detectives are not yet involved.
The house, where the Shermans live, was recently put on the market for just shy of $7 million.

“We just saw them about two weeks ago,” Alvi said. “They had an open house, lovely couple … They were very courteous. Honey is a sweetheart … She was just a lovely person. It’s so sad that something like this has happened.”

In recent years, the couple had been ensnared in a lawsuit over drug company money, filed by Barry’s own cousins.

Barry Sherman was believed to be the youngest person to join the engineering science program at the University of Toronto at just 16 years old. In 1967, he bought Empire Laboratories Ltd., founded by his uncle Louis Winter.

Winter died in 1965, leaving his four young sons without either parent, as their mother Beverley passed away weeks earlier.

That purchase spurred a legal battle, when the Winters — one of whom has passed away — claimed that Sherman promised the executors of their parents’ estate that the Winter children would have a right to work for the company and buy five per cent of the issued shares.

Sherman sold Empire and founded Apotex in 1974. The company manufactures and exports generic pharmaceutical drugs to more than 115 countries, and Apotex is no stranger to litigation issues, as companies have pushed back on its efforts to sell cheaper no-name options.

The Winters alleged that Apotex’s founding was made possible from the proceeds of the sale of Empire, meaning that Sherman had a fiduciary duty to them.

Sherman made no provision for them to work at Apotex and become shareholders. In September, a judge dismissed the lawsuit.

As a producer of more than 300 generic pharmaceutical products, Apotex has itself seen a fair number of litigation issues, as companies have pushed back on its efforts to sell cheaper no-name options.
One of the most high-profile of those clashes occurred when pharma giant Bristol-Myers Squibb sued Apotex in 2006 to try and stop it from selling the first generic form of the heart-disease treatment Plavix.
Today, the company has more than 10,000 people in research, development, manufacturing and distribution facilities world-wide, with more than 6,000 employees at its Canadian operations. Those include manufacturing and research facilities concentrated in the Toronto area as well as in Winnipeg.
Filling more than 89 million prescriptions in a year and exporting to 115 countries, the privately held company says its worldwide sales exceed $2 billion a year.Sherman’s wife, Honey, was a member of the board of the Baycrest Foundation and the York University Foundation. She also served on the boards of Mount Sinai’s Women’s Auxiliary, the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the International American Joint Distribution Committee.

The Shermans were among Canada’s most generous philanthropists and also organized funding of charitable causes through the Apotex Foundation. The couple made numerous multimillion-dollar donations to hospitals, schools and charities and had buildings named in their honour.

There are other possibilities that would include a criminal element but not be homicide, including bad recreational drugs, or a murder-suicide.

The couple leave four children.

First thing I thought of was carbon monoxide poisoning. Second thing is murder, which is more likely.

I noticed the Shermans had put the home up for sale. Is it possible that they had turned off the Utility to the house or if the Power Co. had done so during the sale process and the Shermans tried to turn the gas back on and some malfunction occurred.
Were the Shermans actually living at the residence at the time or just visiting the property during the sale process. I live in the SF Bay Area and many homes of that value here would be staged by the real estate agent and the occupant would move out before actual sale would take place.

Homicide not being called in must mean freak accident (carbon monoxide etc) or murder suicide.

With two such prominent citizens, it seems like Homicide would be running the case from the outset if there was any mystery whatsoever.

Yikes...
The bodies were found in the house by a real estate agent showing the house for prospective clients, the National Post understands. Officials would not confirm details of the discovery.

Other rumours in the article: Mr. Sherman, unusually, didn't go to work Thursday. They were building a new house closer to downtown. Listing just before Christmas seems odd (though in TO, don't know that it matters).

I agree that it seems unlikely they'd be living in the home while it was being shown.

Police said later Friday evening that they are not currently seeking any suspects but are keeping an open mind on all possibilities.

“We did not observe any signs of forced entry into the building and so at this point indications are that we have no outstanding suspect to be going after,”‘ Det. Brandon Price told reporters
.

Using my decoding ring to analyse these latest police statements, they are sending out warning signals, for sure.

This will be a big international story. They have to figure out how much to reveal while trying to give the family privacy.
