FO attempts to find missing nurse

The UK Foreign Office has said its staff are doing all they can to trace a 50-year-old nurse who is missing in South America.

Jennifer Pope, 50, of Mossley, Greater Manchester, had sent regular e-mails to her husband and son during her four-month trip across the continent.

But she has not been in contact with them since 9 January.

Police said her bank account had been emptied, with "irregular transactions" starting the day after her last e-mail.

It was overdrawn to its maximum amount between 10 and 16 January.

The Foreign Office told the BBC they are working directly with the local police to try and trace Mrs Pope. More here -- http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4682350.stm

I just stumbled across the link yesterday while searching for other things. This is so sad. Thoughts for Jennifer and her family.

A security guard has been jailed for 25 years in Ecuador after being found guilty of robbing and kidnapping a British nurse.

Francisco Fabian Sanchez Chica, 29, abducted Jennifer Pope, 50, from Greater Manchester, while she was on a backpacking trip to the country.

He had earlier lost an appeal against kidnap, theft and robbery charges. Mrs Pope, has been missing since 9 January 2006, and police and her family fear she is dead.

Feb 2007 article:

A DAMNING dossier of evidence was built up against Francisco Fabian Sanchez Chica before he was finally brought to justice.

As a security guard hanging around the cheap and cheerful hotel where nurse Jennifer Pope was staying in Banos, he would know the visitors' movements - and the sort of cash they travelled with.

After his arrest money found in his account almost exactly matched the quantity stolen from the nurse's account after her disappearance.

Her perfume and other personal items were later found stashed in the home he shared with his wife - and lover.

His mistress, Carmen Culquiculma, 28, is currently on the run from police who have issued a warrant for her arrest also in connection to Mrs Pope's disappearance. It is not known if she was used to lure Mrs Pope into a false sense of security to perhaps go with the couple

The security guard, who is also known by the alias Pancho de la Cruz, has not been charged with Mrs Pope's murder because despite exhaustive searches police cannot find the married mother's body.

I can't find out if Carmen Culquiculma was ever caught.
