Franklin County ‘cold case’ heats up with suspect’s arrest

RUSSELLVILLE – Franklin County authorities say they have made another step toward closing the file on a six-year-old homicide.

The 35-year-old son of a woman shot to death in January 2000 has been charged with capital murder.

Franklin County District Attorney Joey Rushing said Henry Roger Jones Jr., was served Wednesday with the arrest warrant at Limestone Correctional Facility in Capshaw where he is serving a 25-year sentence for an unrelated robbery.

Bonnie Parker Jones, 53, was found inside her home on Alabama 24 shortly after 3 a.m. on Jan. 13, 2000.

Authorities said it was Henry Jones who found the body of his mother and notified law enforcement. Henry Jones lived with his sister in a manufactured home next door to his mother’s residence.

Rushing said the indictment was returned during the January 2006 grand jury session.

“Based on original information and re-interviews by sheriff’s investigators and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation, we believed there was sufficient evidence to present to the grand jury and (the jurors) chose to issue the indictments,’’ Rushing said.

Franklin County Sheriff Larry Plott said Henry Jones had been a suspect during the course of the investigation.

“After re-interviewing some people, there were some information that became clear,’’ the sheriff said. “There are a lot of elements to this case and as it continues on there will be information that will come out to support this arrest.’’

Authorities said Bonnie Jones was shot twice – once in the head and once in the back.

After hearing four days of testimony, a Franklin County jury found the man accused of killing his mother seven years ago guilty of Felony Murder and Burglary.

Henry Roger Jones, 36, now faces a sentence of 20 years to life for each count...

"This verdict is basically saying that they [the jury] did not believe that he intended to kill his mother when he entered the home, but did end up killing her," District Attorney Joey Rushing said.
