DUETTE, Fla. -- A 16-year-old girl was found fatally shot off a rural state road in southwestern Florida, authorities said.

Amber Woods of Hardee County had been shot once in the back of the neck, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's office.

Her body was found early Saturday about 3 miles west of the Hardee County line, shortly after family members reported her missing.

A relative identified the teen, who had been dead for up to 12 hours, at the scene, sheriff's spokesman Dave Bristow said.

Woods had been living with her aunt and uncle and had spent Friday night playing cards until around midnight, an uncle, Vernon Richardson, told The Herald of Bradenton.

Ralph Williams, 36, and Tyjuan Williams, 32, who are both in jail on unrelated charges, are charged with second-degree murder, while their half-brother, Jamaine Brown, 37, is charged with kidnapping and accessory after the fact to murder.

The arrests were announced by Sheriff Rick Wells during a press conference at the Manatee County Sheriff's Office District 3 Office at 10 a.m. Monday.

Woods' body was found in February 2006 by a passerby along State Road 62 approximately three miles west of the Hardee County line.

"Cold, callous, just the worst in our society," Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells called the suspects. "These are cold hearted individuals. That’s all you can say. This girl had her whole life in front of her and they treated her like she was nothing. That says it all."

Woods' sister-in-law, Chrystal Moses, said the men claimed a life that cannot be replaced, and then lived free for over a decade.

Ralph Williams is also facing first-degree murder charges for Woods’ killing and is scheduled to face trial in September.

During the state’s closing arguments, Assistant State Attorneys Suzanne O’Donnell and Rebecca Freel laid out the timeline of evidence leading up to Woods’ murder, including using cell phone texts, phone calls, and testimony from key witness, Jamaine Brown, the defendant’s half-brother.

Brown, who testified Wednesday, was arrested along with his brothers in 2020 but took a plea deal to accessory after the fact to murder and agreed to testify against his younger siblings.

“Amber Woods was a love-sick teenager,” O’Donnell began her closing, adding Woods thought that Williams was the one. Earlier in the trial, the prosecution showed a video of a 16-year-old Woods gushing into the camera as she showed what appeared to be a diamond ring given to her by Williams.
