CHP officer killed on Highway 99 near Ripon

RIPON, Calif. - A California Highway Patrol officer was shot and killed early Friday during a traffic stop on Highway 99, making him the fifth CHP officer killed on duty in the last five months, the highway commissioner said.
Officer Earl Scott, 36, was killed about 4:40 a.m. PST during a traffic stop near Ripon, about 10 miles north of Modesto, Highway Commissioner Mike Brown said.

A motorist passing by found the officer's body in his car and called authorities, Brown said.

Officials are questioning a man who walked into the Stockton Police Department and turned himself in about 8:40 a.m, according to Stanislaus County Assistant Sheriff Mark Puthuff. The agency is helping the CHP with the investigation.

Authorities are still looking for a dark green 1990 Nissan Maxima with California license plates, 5KWA335, in connection to the shooting.

Stockton man in custody suspected to be part of crime

SALIDA -- Eleven hours after a Modesto-based California Highway Patrol officer was shot and killed, officials arrested a 30-year-old Stockton man and charged him with murder.
CHP officer Earl Scott, 36, of Hughson was killed by a single bullet to the head after making what officials described as a "routine" traffic stop early Friday on Highway 99 just south of the Hammett Road exit.

Stanislaus County sheriff's homicide investigators arrested Columbus Jr Allen II in Stockton about 3:30 p.m. on a charge of murder, officials said. Allen had walked into the Stockton Police Department four hours after the shooting and "linked himself to this murder," said Assistant Sheriff Mark Puthuff.

There was a second arrest, in this case, at the Oakland airport last night, but I haven't seen a news article on the arrest yet.

The slain officer was holding the registration of the involved vehicle in his hand

SALIDA — In a late night development, investigators have taken a second man into custody in connection with the shooting death of a California Highway Patrol Officer.

According to media sources, the suspect, Christopher Hicks, was apparently stopped at the Oakland International Airport trying to board a plane. Sources at the Oakland Police Department said the man was taken in as a "material witness" and booked on misdemeanor warrants.

FIVE OFFICERS HAVE BEEN LOST IN 5 MONTHS

A frenetic Friday that began with the pre-dawn killing of a California Highway Patrol officer ended with one man in custody and authorities searching from the Central Valley to the Bay Area for a second suspect. Earl Scott, a 36-year-old officer and son of a retired CHP sergeant, was fatally shot about 4:40 a.m. while conducting a traffic stop on Highway 99 near Ripon, 10 miles north of Modesto, said Highway Patrol Commissioner Mike Brown.

Scott, who would have marked his fifth year with the CHP on Sunday, is the fifth CHP officer to have died in the line of duty in the past five months -- a grim statistic that is on the minds of the 7,500 officers who patrol the state's highways. "It just seems like once one thing is ending, here comes something else," said officer Jeramy Peterson, a 6 1/2-year veteran who works out of the San Jose CHP station.

Early Friday morning, Scott was able to supply investigators with a key clue -- the description and license plate of the car, which he radioed in as he stopped the vehicle. A motorist who saw the shooting went back to investigate and discovered Scott dead, said Lt. Bryan Markum of the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department.

Authorities in Oakland detained a man described as a material witness Friday night in the murder of a California Highway Patrol officer in Salida, the CHP confirmed Saturday.

Officers confirmed a man was taken into custody at Oakland International Airport Friday night in connection with the murder of CHP Officer Earl Scott. The suspect, who is being detained on outstanding warrants, has been identified as Christopher Edward Hicks, who was reportedly trying to board a flight out of the area, according to Bay Area station KGO.

Stanislaus County Sheriff's spokesman Mike Parker would not confirm the man's name Saturday, only identifying the detainee as a material witness in the case.

This is horribly sad. The fifth CHP officer killed in 5 months! Theirs is a scary, dangerous job. Out there alone, never knowing if their next stop may end in death.

I don't think they should ever go out alone and their cars should all be equipt with cameras. :( :mad:

RP, so this guy walks into the Stockton police station to talk about the CHP Officer shooting, saying he didn't do the shooting, and now he has been pinpointed as the lone person in the vehicle, and named as the shooter.

I wish we could train all shooters to walk into a police station.

The solving of this tragic murder almost seems too easy.

Allen, 34, will spend the rest of his life in prison...

CHP officer Brandon Moore told the court that Scott, in his last moments, held on to evidence that prosecutors would later point to as the case's "smoking gun." Scott was found clutching the registration card to a maroon 1990 Nissan Maxima registered to Allen's wife, Bertera.
