Last updated Feb 22 2006
CBC News

Searchers are combing an area in Cape Breton's Northside for a woman who has been missing for about a month.

Shelly Marie Smith, 28, was last seen near her home on Third Street in Florence in late January.

Police and search-and-rescue crews are focusing on an area near there, off Church Street.

"We have a lot of open pits here, a lot of open area and also some heavy brush," said Const. Barry Morrison, "also the shoreline in the area of Little Pond, bordering the ocean."

Smith is described as five-foot tall and about 100 pounds, with long blonde hair and blue eyes.

Anyone with information about Smith is asked to call Cape Breton Regional Police or Crime Stoppers.

Missing woman’s boyfriend says: I didn’t kill her

February 23, 2006
By TERA CAMUS Cape Breton Bureau

FLORENCE — The prime suspect in the disappearance of a 28-year-old mother of three says he didn’t kill her.

David MacKeigan of Florence told The Chronicle Herald on Wednesday the last time he saw his live-in girlfriend Shelly Smith was the night she disappeared, Jan. 25, after they had a fight.

Cape Breton Regional Police, alerted by Ms. Smith’s relatives late last week that she was missing, pleaded for information on her whereabouts.

Police on Wednesday sent their four-man dog team to join about 30 civilians from Cape Breton Ground Search and Rescue in searching the woods, fields and marshes around Florence.

The search began within view of Mr. MacKeigan’s apartment, which has been under constant police surveillance since Monday.

This case just popped up so decided to take a look to see what justice was done.

It was an emotional morning at the Every Woman’s Centre as work began on a life-size wooden silhouette in memory of Shelley Marie Smith.

Edie Smith paints the first few strokes of red paint on a wooden silhouette in memory of her daughter, Shelley Marie Smith, who was murdered by her boyfriend in 2006. The silhouette is part of the Silent Witness Project, being organized by the Silent Witness Cape Breton committee. Wanda Earhart, in the background, of the Every Woman’s Centre and member of the committee, holds the paint for Smith. The silhouettes are being created at the Every Woman’s Centre in downtown Sydney.

Smith’s badly burned remains were found in late February 2006 in an isolated wooded area of Little Pond, about a month after she had last been seen.

David Clarence MacKeigan of Florence, was handed a life sentence without the possibility of parole for 13 years for the second-degree murder.
