OH - Five charged in murder & beheading of Steven Spade
Prosecution case thin, defense says
Trial of last defendant in murder and beheading revolves around theory that he controlled others
How does one unarmed man built like Barney Fife coerce four others to take part in a sadistic killing?
Why does the victim's classmate eagerly join in, beating his friend and aiding in mutilating his body?
Why does the victim's cousin stand by and watch?
And why does a 6-foot, 300-pound man with a gun in his pocket say he was so afraid of the slender Patrick Shane Rafferty that he helped kill and dismember Steven Spade?
While trials sometimes provide answers, the more that is revealed about Spade's murder, the more incomprehensible it becomes.

Really good feature article on the case, from April 2006:
On this afternoon, Brookman let his friend in from the cold. Three inches of muddy snow covered the ground as the two hung out in Brookman's East Akron home, making plans for the evening... when Spade's cell phone rang. Some friends were getting a limo and heading to Cleveland for a hotel party. "You wanna come?" Spade asked Brookman.
"I was gonna go, but something didn't seem right," Brookman would later testify in court. "He told me there would be some drugs. I decided I didn't need to be a part of that." As February 4, 2005, turned to dusk, Spade's ride finally arrived.
The next time Brookman saw his friend was in grisly autopsy photos. Spade's head had been severed, his body burned to a blackened crisp.
A woman accused of luring her cousin to a home where he was killed has been sentenced to life in prison with a chance for parole after serving 23 years. Lisa Penix, 21, of Akron, was sentenced Tuesday on aggravated murder, kidnapping, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse convictions in the death of Steven Spade...
Patrick Shane Rafferty, 27, of Baton Rouge, La., was convicted of aggravated murder, kidnapping, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse and sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole. William Kramer, 24, of the Akron suburb of New Franklin, and Derek Shutt, 43, of Akron, both pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and will be eligible for parole in about 25 years. Jason Keenan, 31, of Akron, was sentenced to one year in a work release program for tampering with evidence and obstructing justice.
