This so sad and ridiculous! They ran out of federal money and could no longer search. They just got the funds and expect to find 400 more bodies. How horrible that these bodies have just been left in the houses to rot for 6 months. I had no idea that everyone had not been recovered yet. Those poor families!
 
I read they expect to find up to 400 more bodies. Ewwe.
 
They're going to be finding people, here and there, for the next five years.
 
Ran out of money ???? I'm sorry but we can launch ships, missiles, shuttles, help for 3rd world countries after their disasters and so on but for our own citizens, we ran out ? That is so not good enough and so very inexcusable.

Truth of the matter, you can have all the money in the world and some of these bodies would still remain unrecovered, mainly because there are a lot in/under collapsed buildings, or swept into trees and other detritus along the rivers & lakes.
 
I agree its horrible, but some of the survivors are still in hotels and have very little hope. I hope one day that all of the victims are given proper burials, but I think we need to help the survivors now and get their cities up and running.
 
Agreed Jeanna, but in America should we not be able to do both? As an earlier post said, we have the money to fund a war, help third world countries, etc....we should be able to help rebuild these cities AND recover the bodies of loved ones and give them a proper burial. The whole situation in the Katrina aftermath has been mishandled and many lives were lost and suffering because of it.

In a perfect America, yes. However, with the governors of the states affected by Katrina asking for billions more in federal funds, its just not possible to do everything we want done. I'm not saying that I approve of where my every bit of my tax money is going, but the fact of the matter is that even if it weren't going to those places you outlined, they may not be directed towards recovery of bodies either. I'd love to see some citizens step up and offer funding for that, but we can't make them do so. Also, this victim was found at home. Is there some reason family members haven't been there previous to this? Can't we take any responsibility for our family members who have been victims of horrible circumstances?
 
It could be that the family was relocated to another part of the country and have no funds to travel back to NO. Or/and their efforts to notify or receive information is falling on deaf ears.
 
Many that will be found are going to be the ones without family I'm afraid.

Or like in our situation, we have no clue where 4 family members are. We've searched every registry, left messages everywhere, called everyone we know, been down there and left our names and numbers with anyone who'd listen.

Are they in a place where they have no phone service still? Did they go to a smaller town headed from La to Al and get stuck? Did they die in La or in a smaller town in Miss? Are they living in tents?

We know their place of business is no longer there, we know their house is still standing but empty to the best of our knowledge.

What else can be done?

As for the lack of funding, misuse of funding is the main reason they had to call off the hunt. That and not being able to have anywhere to stay, no gas, no safety equipment etc. But ice was going for 14 bucks a bag!

And if I can get on my soap box, stupid celebs like Oprah, Sean and others who go down and took men away from the hunt to guard their stupid bodies and those of their camera crew just so they can look good while those boys could have been hunting for folks is another reason. Who do you reckon paid for that? And from where did they pull the money to do that?
 
I heard that in a few areas hit hardest people were not allowed in yet! Nothing at all left. Families loosing others & tried finding a loved one they knew died. All agencies stated the homes were searched no body found. Families went in & here was a leg in the air & sure enough they had lied to the people & there was no search ever made.

In hurricane Rita officals stated no one died. Yet my nephew was involved in the search & rescue & they found 4 bodies dead. His team brought them in. Government says to this date no deaths. Go figure.......
 
Plus I've heard there could be up to 2000 that could never be found because they essentially have been either washed out to sea so to speak after breaking down in the waters &/or alligator swamps have taken care of the rest. Either way, I'm beginning to believe in GOVERNMENT CONSPIRACIES..... As so many of these dear people were black americans. AMERICANS FOR GOD SAKES. HOW DO YOU SUPPLY UNLIMITED FINANCES TO AN ILLEGAL WAR BUT QUIT LOOKING FOR YOUR OWN AMERICANS?

Well I don't think I would call the war illegal even though I didn't want it. I just think if any of my American solidiers need something, I'd rather have my tax money going to them than rather then to search for someone who can't be helped. :twocents:

Fox reporting they found another one yesterday with the help of cadaver dogs. I believe it was the lower ninth ward. I guess the funds are back on track.

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- One of three canine search-and-rescue teams trained to look for bodies left by Hurricane Katrina plans to leave New Orleans after just a few days on the job, because there won't be a hotel room to stay in, the men said Wednesday.

Game wardens Wayde Carter and Roger Guay said Louisiana apparently didn't make the proper arrangements with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to guarantee them housing after Thursday night, and their supervisor, Maj. Greg Sanborn, has called them back to Maine.

The families of the ones believed to be lost to the sea (which happens in all hurricanes, whatever their magnitude), since there is no 100% proof of death (as in a body, or identifiable part of one) have to wait 7 years before being declared legally dead and added to the official body count. That's standard, and always has been. And, to be blunt, once someone's dead--well, there's nothing much more that can be done for them. The primary purposes behind the inital body retrieval wasn't "honoring the dead" but sanitation, pure and simple. The sole purposes was to prevent outbreaks of cholera. In extremely vast disasters, energy is best focused on the survivors.
And as for the races of the dead--it's been proved that they were pretty much 60% white, so the race card doesn't apply. The poverty card, might, though. And the areas that are still pretty much untouched since Katrina aren't the cities like Biloxi and New Orleans (which already have several casinos open and running apiece BTW) but the tiny rural communities and small towns that were slightly inland from the coast, like Bay St. Louis.
