Two house fires in separate US states have killed 15 people.

In eastern Tennessee, a fire killed nine members of a family. The fire may have started on the second floor, where the victims, all members of an extended family, were sleeping, said Rhea County Sheriff Mike Neal.

Authorities were still investigating the fire but did not suspect foul play.

A 19-year-old man escaped unharmed from the first floor. He was the only person in the house not sleeping on the second floor.

In Indiana, a house fire possibly sparked by a wood-burning stove killed a couple and their four young children.

The bodies of the two adults and an infant were found near a side door on the first floor, said State Police First Sgt Jeff Franklin.

They appeared to have been overcome by smoke as they struggled to escape the house, located in a rural forested valley crisscrossed by streams and gravel roads in southwestern Indiana.

The bodies of the other children were found in a first-floor bedroom.

The victims had been burned beyond recognition. (AP)
