Australia - Girl, 7, left on her own

CHILDCARE workers did not notice a distressed seven-year-old girl was left behind at a Frankston park during an outing with her play group until her father raised the alarm about an hour later.

Casey Smith was left lost and alone at Bellam Park after an outing with children and staff from Hampton Park Community House on Tuesday.

The bus carrying her friends and carers drove off without her after staff wrongly counted the children returning on the bus.

Her father Paul Smith arrived to collect Casey and her sister Emma, 9, from the centre to find staff didn't know where Casey was and hadn't realised she was missing.

A frantic 15 minutes followed until Frankston police called to say they had collected Casey from the park after a family found her alone and crying.

Mr Smith believed up to an hour had passed between when the bus left the park and when Casey was taken to the police station.

While extremely relieved Casey was safe, Mr Smith said he was angry the centre had failed in its duty of care.

Mr Smith and wife Sally-Ann said they would be extremely reluctant to put their daughters into child care again.

The family have reported the incident to the Department of Human Services, and are calling for more stringent regulations to ensure children on excursions are looked after.

"Parents should be very careful," Mr Smith said. "Casey is OK now, but of course she was very upset. Anything could have happened."

Mr Smith was also angry that staff claimed Emma should have noticed her sister was missing and alerted them. Hampton Park Community House yesterday said it had minded children for 25 years without incident.

So now the center is gonna put it off on the sister for "not noticing!" So what if they've watched children for 25 years without incident. Would that have been their excuse if something even more horirble had happened because of their neglectful actions? I agree with you Aussiegran...unfrickenbelievable
