NY - Ricardo Walters for rapes, robberies, Nassau County, 2005-2007

April 2, 2006 -- An off-duty New York City correction officer shot and killed one of two men who broke into his car in the driveway of his Long Island home early yesterday morning.

Ricardo Walters, 41, of Hempstead, awoke at 1:30 a.m. to the sound of his car alarm.

Nassau County cops said the married father of three peered out of his bedroom window and saw two men rummaging through his 2001 Mitsubishi Galant, trying to steal his radio.

The thieves realized they had been spotted and immediately began to flee on foot across Walters' front lawn. Walters ran out to confront them and they fired a shot at him.

He returned fire three times and struck one of the men in the head. The victim was rushed to Nassau University Medical Center, where he died at 2:30 a.m. His accomplice escaped.

Walters wasn't charged in that case, but his story wasn't over yet. From March 2008:

A suspended New York City correction officer who had already been charged in a gunpoint robbery has been indicted in a string of kidnappings, robberies and rapes stretching back three years, the police said.

“The bottom line is: This guy, he’s a predator,” said Detective Sgt. Anthony Repalone of the Nassau County police.

The suspended officer, Ricardo Walters, 42, was arrested Thursday on a 21-count indictment charging him with crimes here between April 2005 and September 2007...
    From 2009:

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced today that a judge has sentenced convicted sexual predator Ricardo Walters, 43, of Hempstead, to 203 years in prison, after a jury in November found the former New York City corrections officer guilty of rape, kidnapping, sexual assault, and robbery charges in connection with a series of early morning attacks, including one on a pregnant woman.
