NEW LENOX, Ill. -- You've heard of an apple for the teacher. How about a kidney for the student?
A 10-year-old boy in the Chicago suburbs who's in need of a new kidney is scheduled to get one next month. The donor will be his fourth-grade teacher.
Patricia Donohue volunteered to be a potential donor for Brandon Shafer after learning the boy's mother wasn't a close enough match.
It turned out Donohue was a perfect match.
The 25-year-old, who once served in the Peace Corps, said she is glad to be donating the organ because her own father, who suffered from leukemia, owes his life to a bone marrow transplant several years ago.
