LOS ANGELES (AP) — An 82-year-old woman has received a $114 traffic ticket -- for taking too long to cross a street.

Mayvis Coyle said she began shuffling with her cane across Foothill Boulevard in the San Fernando Valley when the light was green, but was unable to make it to the other side before it turned red.

She said the motorcycle officer who ticketed her on Feb. 15 told her she was obstructing traffic. "I think it's completely outrageous," said Coyle. "He treated me like a 6-year-old, like I don't know what I'm doing."

That's a bit mean isn't it?? Bless her!!
Aren’t Policemen supposed to see old ladies across the road anyway???
Now, I am a Policemans wife but I will still say this "Didn't that Policeman have anything better to do than to give a ticket to an 82 year old lady". I suppose he may think that was his good deed for the day??? It was part of his duty to see that lady across the road safely, now I am really maaaaaad!!!!   He's probably the type to give his own Mum a ticket!!

What a jerk!

God bless her...still street walking at her age:rolleyes:

Geez...I guess that this cop hadn't met his quota for the month and was desperate. How ridiculous. In other countries, they honor and cherish their elders. In this country, we are rude and disrespectful to them. I always go out of my way to be kind and helpful to the elderly. I know that I will be there someday...and that day is getting closer and closer...

You can tell that "Man" never learned any manners. He should have parked that toy the gov' provides him with and escorted her across the street. Any drivers who didn't give her the right of way should have received the tickets.

sadly we live in a society where "CARS RULE"... and this mentality dictates so much about our daily lives now. the building of highways wins out above all else, to the point where they now dominate the landscape. and people have turned into uncivilized bullies when it comes to anyone being in the way of getting to where they want to go, as fast as possible.

btw, i would think that her community should stand up for her, against this idiot of a policeman. not to pay the ticket,. but to FIGHT the ticket in court!
i understand that people should not block the road for their own safety as well as the drivers', but this is wrong. i would like to think that in a few years america won't be like mexico city (& other places around the world), where people (including children) get hit at 100 MPH like animals and their bodies just lay there & get squashed, it isn't safe for anyone to go retrieve them.

Well the good part, is in this area of LA, there are a lot of elderly people.

Even kids have to run to make this light.

Apparently the light allows for 4 feet per second and there is no way an elderly person is going to do that. An elderly person walks at 3.85 per second.

So LA may retime this light to ensure that elderly people in this area have enough time to cross the light.

BTW, it is the word of the elderly women against the police officer, guess whom the judge will most likely believe.

The article notes that the head of the traffic police said they are cracking down on people who improperly cross the street. How on earth is this woman supposed to get across the street if that is where she needs to be? I would like to hear more details. Was she crossing in the middle of a block? at a crosswalk? I hope we hear more about this one.

This is just not right. I hope the Old Lady Committees hit him with their purses like Ruth Buzzy (for those who KNOW who that is :D )

my god, what is the world coming to ....he should be named, shamed, and then sacked!!this woman , bless her IS someones mother, and even grandmother!!IF this moronic cop HAS a mother , she should disown him!! Its just the same here in England tho ...the world has gone nuts..

Seems we dont have the guts to stand up to real enemies in this world...murderers, thugs, etc, oh no!! got go look after their human rights...and never mind that poor woman!!grrrrrrrr.

Update--I am glad that people are sticking up for this nice lady.

Elderly Woman's Jaywalk Ticket Draws Outrage

http://cbs5.com/topstories/local_story_104114403.html

Mayvis Coyle got more than just a $114 jaywalking ticket for taking too long to cross a busy street.

With the 82-year-old woman's fine has come international celebrity -- she has camera crews showing up at her home, invitations to appear on television and support from around the world.

"I didn't want all this publicity," Coyle said Thursday. "But I'm not objecting to being used if it gets the lights changed and gets respect for the elderly." (More at link)

What I cannot fathom is why the cop didn't realize that this would become major news! What was he thinking?
