Search for killer intensifies

Remains found in the woods in the Blue Ridge Gap area were positively identified Tuesday as those belonging to Susan Cannon Crane.

Rabun County Sheriff Don Page said the state crime lab confirmed her identity using dental records.

The search that began after she was reported missing in March 2005 has narrowed to an area about a quarter mile from where Crane was last seen leaving a residence Feb. 21, 2005, on Dolly Dixon Lane.

"We're handling this as a homicide," Page said. "That's what it is, as far as I'm concerned."

Exerpt:
Friday her sister sat down with us to talk about the news.

"It hasn't sunk in yet," says Vicki Mullins. "We have been hoping, searching and praying for 14 months."

Vicki is Susan Cannon Crane's older sister. She and her family have been in turmoil since Susan went missing in February of 2005.

"We figured she'd be back," says Vicki.

But that didn't happen. Police searched for her numerous times in rough terrain, but there was no sign of Susan.

"I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy," says Vicki.

Over the weekend they finally got some closure. Just one mile from where a previous search took place, two teens were turkey hunting when they found a skull. Dental records proved it was Susan's.

"Relief that she was found, but it's frustrating because she was right here the whole time."

As if the family hasn't been through enough, they just received some awful news. John Cannon was diagnosed with lung cancer. John is Susan's dad. He's also a retired Georgia State Patrol Man. The family believes all the stress from the past three years contributed to his illness. But they are thankful for one thing.

"Our prayer was that we would find Susan before daddy left us."

Now that they found her, they still have many unanswered questions. They want to know why Susan was in the woods and who took her there. They also want to know why no one came forward sooner.

"Why did you put us through hell? Why couldn't you have told someone who would have told us where she was resting?"

Nope. Nothing was ever truly done to seek justice for her or her family
