A 21-year-old baby sitter, charged with injury to a child in the death of a toddler, remained in the Dallas County jail on Wednesday.
Bond for Jared Malik Shakur of Dallas was set at $150,000. He eventually will be transferred to the authorities in Denton County, where the offense allegedly occurred, Dallas County sheriffs Sgt. Don Peritz said.
He is at least the third care giver arrested in the past two months in connection with the death of a child.
Dallas police said Mr. Shakur was baby-sitting a 2-year-old girl identified by Child Protective Services as Xanyiah Modester in the 3700 block of Rosemeade Parkway in Far North Dallas.
Mr. Shakur drove Xanyiah to an Albertsons store near Frankford Road and the Dallas North Tollway, where Xanyiah's mother works.
Paramedics and police were summoned to the store about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. The girl was rushed to Plano Presbyterian Hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.
