I have noticed that these magicians/illusionists that are really big fans of Houdini are the ones that push themselves like this. It's almost as though they feel if they die during something that goes above and beyond what Houdini did then they can die at something he never achieved. Criss Angel is also a big Houdini fan and also pushes his body to limits that are unnerving. He's been buried alive, struck by lightning, hung by hooks in his back for days at a time. I love Criss Angel and am waiting for his new season to start this month. His illusions are fantastic and if you think David Blaine is hot, you gotta see Criss. The man is beautiful!

Here is a great document, showing that David Blaine's stuff is just illusion...which is fine, I don't think he claims to have supernatural powers, he is an illusionist, and a very good one....I just get a kick out of how many people think this guy is really doing this stuff, LOL.

Houdini set the bar for the these guys, and a lot of his stunts have never been replicated because Houdini died before he could annotate them in his journals, and I've heard he also used a special notation code as well to keep certain aspects secret. Much of what we know about his tricks and stunts came from his widow. The man's been dead what--nearly a century?--and we still know who he is and his name has become a part of our language of superlatives. THAT's what these guys are striving for.
And Houdini was pretty damn handsome himself--and built like a brick outhouse, if you've ever seen the pictures of him in his swim trunks.
