FORT SASKATCHEWAN - The man charged with murdering a prostitute and transporting her body across northern Alberta in a hockey bag posed in front of news cameras Thursday as he was led into court.

Thomas George Svekla grinned, waved and gave a thumbs-up to reporters before his first appearance in Fort Saskatchewan provincial court.

When he later stood in the prisoner's box to hear the charges, the divorced mechanic scanned the crowd, then, bouncing on his feet, stared up at the ceiling.

I seen this guy on the local news here last night,he is a wing nut.I sure hope he is the one they have been searching for,it would a long time coming in getting this serial killer in Edmonton put away.

Shock turned to anger for Rachel Quinney's family as they learned the man charged in the latest slaying of a city prostitute may have been a person of interest in the 2004 murder of their daughter and sister.

Sun columnist Andrew Hanon says Svekla approached him in late 2004 for help clearing his name in relation to the Quinney murder. Svekla told Hanon he found the body of Quinney when he took a prostitute to the spot to do drugs.

THE BIGGEST LINK WITH THIS GUY IS THAT HE "FOUND" A DEAD WOMAN (don't like calling them prostitutes as they're so much more than that)... ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO.

SO COINCIDENCE THAT HE HAS KILLED A "prostitute" WOMAN AND ALSO CAME ACROSS ONE IN A DENSELY WOODED AREA 2 YEARS AGO? AMERICAN FBI PROFILER HAS CALLED THAT A HIGHLY UNLIKELY COINCIDENCE!!!

This is one sick *advertiser censored*...I wonder how many bodies he has stashed....seems he likes to keep them close....(lots of good news links inside first link)

Thomas Svekla is a man with a taste for hookers and a history of drug and alcohol abuse, says a co-worker who's not at all surprised Svekla's been accused of murdering a prostitute. "He'll walk up to streetwalkers after work, talk to them, give them cocaine and booze, take them home and have sex with them, boot them out of his place, and do it all over again the next day," said Tom Upshall, who has worked with Svekla since last summer at the High Level Fountain Tire.

Five similar deaths lead police to suspect single killer

EDMONTON - By mid-2003, 10 Edmonton sex-trade workers had been killed in 14 years

EDMONTON - By mid-2003, 10 Edmonton sex-trade workers had been killed in 14 years.
To the public, the similarities were obvious.
All worked the streets of Edmonton, usually along 118th Avenue. All were found in rural areas to the south or east of the city. All were poor, vulnerable and struggling with drug addictions. Sources have said none were shot or stabbed. There were no obvious injuries.

Each case was investigated separately, by officers in different detachments and units.
But a report from the RCMP Behavioral Sciences Branch in Ottawa changed that.
The special unit looked at the 10 murders and drew out five. According to court documents, the RCMP believe Edna Bernard, Debbie Lake, Monique Pitre, Melissa Munch and Katie Ballantyne were all victims of the same killer.

Amber Tuccaro went missing in Alberta August 2010. Project KARE has released a recording of a conversation between Amber and an unknown male.

The recording is contained within the video. It can also be heard at:

creepy ... she kept questioning him b/c she knew he wasn't going the right way

I think that's her killer - why didn't they release this two years ago?

does he sound older to anyone else?

does he sound older to anyone else?

Yes, he sounds to me like about mid-50s to possibly 60s .. gruff and not very well educated. I also think his voice is that of a heavy-set redneck.

In addition to the above recording, please keep in mind the RCMP profile of the Edmonton serial killer:

The RCMP's Behavioural Science Branch released a criminal profile of the killer of one or more of the women. The profile suggests he:

• Drives a reliable, high-mileage truck, van or sport utility vehicle, and is comfortable driving in rural areas.
• Likes to hunt, fish, camp or participate in other outdoor activities.
• Has a past or present connection to the area south of Edmonton, including Leduc, Camrose and New Sarepta.
• May clean his vehicle at odd times of the day.

At one time, the above profile included the hamlet of Hay Lakes (southeast of Edmonton) as part of the geographical area, and activities also included farming.

RCMP hope new billboards will help solve Amber Tuccaro cold case ...

As the billboard was unveiled Tuesday, Tuccaro’s mother, Vivian, led a healing ceremony in honour of her daughter.

“We need to find who did this to my daughter,” she said, and then recalled how her little girl used to sing.

“She was, like, ‘one of these days, mom, I’m going to be on billboards and all over – and to see this,” she trailed off, before breaking down and crying. “I miss her so much…that was my baby.”

I hope LE is looking at Oliver James Doherty as a possible perp in Amber's case. She disappeared from Nisku in Leduc County in August 2010. Doherty is from Leduc and he was arrested in the Spring of 2011, found guilty on 11 charges related to 3 sexual assaults, and sentenced to 16 years:

I hope they've done a voice comparison of Doherty's voice against the audio that was released in Amber's case.

It says that Amber received a phone call, so the voice recording was taken from the caller?

I think that Amber and the unknown man sound intoxicated... I wonder if all bars in the area around the hotel have been interviewed about a man drinking with Amber there that evening and also if the voice recording has been played at these bars to see if anyone recognizes the voice.

Amber Tuccaro's unsolved murder: Do you recognize this voice? ...

Police released 61 seconds of audio, but CBC News has learned that the full audio recording is 17 minutes in length, which corresponds almost directly to the amount of time it would take to drive from the motel where Tuccaro was staying to the site where her body was found two years later ...

RCMP have refused to disclose how they got the recording or who Tuccaro was speaking to on her cellphone. But CBC News has learned that the call to Amber came from her brother, who was being held in the Edmonton Remand Centre at the time.
