LAS VEGAS (AP) _ Police are investigating the death of an infant found dead in a dumpster in The Mirage hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

Police say the body of a full-term infant was found by garbage workers Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators say the child appeared to have been in the garage bin for several days.

There were no obvious signs of trauma and the cause of death is still unknown.

The garbage area is located in the back of the hotel and consists of several garbage chutes and conveyers leading to a larger bin.

It is out of view of hotel guests and casino patrons.

I will never understand it either. If a baby is born alive why not just wrap it up and take it to a hospital and leave it? Take it to a church and leave it. There is always somewhere a person can leave a baby where it will be found.
I just don't understand why so many girls/women just throw them in a dumpster like a piece of garbage.

It's not just hospitals either! Many states have a law where you can leave a baby at a police station, fire station or hospital and no questions are asked! They passed this law to prevent things like this from happening. And I hope when they find the idiot they prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.

Maybe each city should have a big billboard saying "if you have a baby and you don't want it don't throw it in a dumpster...take it to a hospital, police station, church, etc. No one will look for you as long as you don't treat your baby like garbage." I hope they find the mother and throw her in prison for a long time. There is just no excuse for doing something like that. An autopsy will show if the baby was alive when it was born. Poor little thing.

This is a little off topic but we have that law here were you can take a baby to the hospital/police/fire station and leave them no questions asked. Everytime it happens the news swarms all over trying to get info. Helllllooo...the whole point is it's supposed to be anonymous. One station even had a reporter once saying, "No word yet on the identity of the parents." Way to go jacka$$-thanks for freaking out the people who might be thinking of taking their baby their instead of leaving it in the dumpster.

Police Identify Mother of Infant Found Dead

June 29, 2006 03:13 PM EDT

Las Vegas police say they have identified a 16-year-old female as the mother of a dead infant found in the trash at the Mirage Casino Hotel last week.

Police say she was a guest of the resort and not from Las Vegas. She told police that she had concealed the pregnancy, gave birth to a stillborn baby, panicked, then put the baby in the trash outside her room.

This is so sad. I wonder if the poor little baby was really still born or if it could have been saved if born in a hospital.

Was the COD ever determined in this case? If that baby even took one breath, then she most likely will be charged with manslaughter, or better yet murder as it should be.

In our news area (within the last couple of weeks), there was a newborn baby abandoned in front of a Head Start beside a bus (there was a covered drive-up area, and the baby was between the entrance of the building and the entrance of the bus), obviously where someone would find it. The baby was in a basket and alive, and of course the media was all over the story. Even though the law states that a newborn can only be relinquished legally at a hospital/police/firestation, LE was trying to let the mother know that she probably would NOT be charged despite her choice of an "illegal drop off".

Media was interviewing residents on their opinions about the case...one man opined (and I'm paraphrasing) that the mother needed to be shot for dumping her baby like that...he went on and on about how horrible she was, deserved to be in prison the rest of her life, etc. All I could think was "Thank God and the universe that she DID "dump her baby like that" instead of *really* dumping her baby and sentencing it to death!". Well, that, and how short-sighted the man was to not realize what COULD have happened :(

From August 2009:

http://lasvegassun.com/news/2009/aug/28/police-teen-who-suffocated-infant-dumped-baby-stri/

A 19-year-old woman in the Henderson Detention Center being held without bail and accused of killing her newborn son had also dumped another baby in a trash bin a Las Vegas Strip hotel in 2006...

Camero said in an early interview that the baby appeared alright and she stayed with him all night. She said he died about five hours after she gave birth in a bathtub at the house... Then Wednesday night, when Camero was interviewed again, she told detectives she feared that her mother would be angry at her for having the child out of wedlock...

As she lay with the infant, he began to make coughing sounds. She didn't want his noises to alert her mother, so she forced the baby's face to her chest, she told police. She said she knew bringing him that close would stop his breathing and he would eventually die.

Couldn't find any MSM on sentencing, so I checked Nevada DOC and found Carmela Camero currently incarcerated but it gave no details of her crime or sentence. Her prison pen pal profile says her earliest possible release date is September 1, 2019, so it looks like she's in for at least ten years:

She wasn't charged in the first baby's death because the coroner ruled it a stillbirth.
