NORTHPORT, Ala. A Northport teen was found fatally shot in his home Thursday after his friends arrived to pick him up for a day at the lake.

17-year-old Jeremy Scott Cockrell was found dead in his bedroom by friends.

Northport police Chief Robert Green says his friends had planned to spend the day with him at Lake Tuscaloosa.

Tuscaloosa Metro Homicide investigators said they have spent the past 10 years exhausting numerous leads and they have spoken to hundreds of witnesses without any clues...

Investigators said they know someone forced entry through one of the doors in the home.

They believe Cockrell was a specific target but they do not know why anyone would want to have hurt him.

Cockrells friends were coming to his home in the Biscayne Hills neighborhood, not far from the intersection of McFarland Blvd. and Highway 43, to pick him up for a day at the lake. They arrived that morning and found Cockrell had been killed...

In the days leading up to the crime, witnesses reported seeing a late 1990s model white Ford Escort near Cockrells home on multiple occasions.

Investigators say the vehicle, with chrome or fake rims and a Jefferson County license plate, was occupied by black and white males.

13-year-old cold case continues to generate tips

As Tuscaloosa Police Capt. Kip Hart prepared to talk to news reporters about the anniversary of one of his old cases Friday morning, a new tip came in.

Thirteen years after Scotty Cockrell was found dead in his Northport home, someone messaged the Tuscaloosa Police Department’s Facebook page with information.

“We received this tip out of the blue,” Hart said. “That shows us people are still thinking about it. Maybe the person remembered the anniversary, or maybe they just came across the information themselves.”
