I'm praying but not holding out much hope that they are okay. Sounds like they are really upstanding people who were very involved with their Church and community.

I wonder how LE knows that all three are missing? I'd like to know more about the grandson and what kind of a kid he is and who his friends were. I that suspect was a friend of his that doesn't sound good at all.

I wonder if the grandparents had money or something that someone would have thought they were worth killing over. Gosh, they are two really elderly people who were probably easy to tie up or whatever. A 19 yr old is another story though unless more then 1 person broke into their house or were let in.

You would think that whoever did this would have just left the bodies in the house. That would be a lot of trouble to move three people. Moving them doesn't make a lot of sense. I wonder if their vehicle is missing too.

I hope LE finds out something about this case. If that suspect has already murdered he is a good possibility for this case.

Bodies positively identified as Martins, Evans
Focus now turns to who killed family

Three decomposed bodies found near a footbridge in Bessemer last week have been positively identified as those of a missing College Hills family, ending six months of extensive searching for the elderly couple and their grandson.

"We are glad the family has some sense of closure," said police chief Annetta Nunn. "There are some individuals missing from Birmingham that have yet to be found."

Authorities are now searching for the person or persons responsible for the deaths of John and Evelyn Martin, 84 and 82, and their 19-year-old grandson, Ryan Evans. Their bodies were found near Borah Avenue and Alabama 150 in Bessemer. The Jefferson County Coroner's office identified the family on Monday and has ruled foul play in their deaths, police said.

Derrol Shaw, 19, of Birmingham, is considered a person of interest in the case, Nunn said. Shaw, an acquaintance of Evans, is in jail on two counts of carjacking in a case unrelated to the Martins' case.

Authorities said Shaw may have been living in the Martins' basement without their knowledge.

Shaw was arrested on carjacking charges near where police found the Martins' 2005 Toyota Camry, and has been in custody since June 15.

What ever happened to those other missing women in Birmingham? The ones Natalie Holloway's mother was demanding equal resources for? :liar:

I think one was coming back from a concert or something, stopped with her friend at a convenience store or gas station for matches, and was never seen again. She did make a phone call saying she was lost. Her stepdad (?) was desperately looking for her.

The other one was a cook at a children's hospital. Her sister-in-law used to post here. She disappeared on her way to work early one morning, and it sounded like her lover had something to do with it.

Hello BhamMama,:)
Thank-you for the article. This is truly a horrible story.

living in their basement *without* their knowledge?? how can that be possible.......?!

I'm so sad they were found dead. But so glad they now have answers as to where they were. I hope they find and convict who ever soon.

The part about the basement scares me but I can sorta relate. I had a little room where you could keep lawnmowers etc under my house. I stored a couch in there though because I didn't do grass. I was going to give my brother the couch and went down to un cover it and pull it out to air. I found a space heater hanging up in the rafters, an orange extension cord and a gun holster in there with it. My neighbors teenaged son was living there after being kicked out of his house. I found out who it was by questioning people and someone said they'd seen him on my porch plugging up the cord. I went and found his father and his father went and got him from work. We both questioned him. He said he'd been there about 2 weeks. I had no clue!! I was seriously freaked out and bought a big dog, a big alarm and a big gun pronto!

From January 2008:

Ryan Evans was estranged from his parents and needed a place to stay. The Martins offered their basement with an orange sofa bed, near a sliding glass door so Evans could come and go as he pleased.

Three months later, Derrol Shaw would walk through that door and kill Evans for bragging about a murder they had committed, testimony in Shaw's capital murder trial last week showed. Shaw also killed the Martins, then dumped all three bodies in a ravine where they would remain for six months.

Shaw, 20, was sentenced to life without parole after a capital murder trial last week in the shooting deaths of the Martins, Evans and another man, Walter Hill.
