New Jersey Shutdown: Day 3, Atlantic City Casinos Ordered to Close

Technically, the constitution of the state of NJ requires the casinos to close immediately. But the Casino Control Commission decided to wait until after the 4th of July holiday.
Horseracing facilities have already closed. The DMV is closed. State parks will close after the holiday. Half of the state employees are on involuntary furlough and the other half are working without pay.
Meanwhile the politicians are claiming they're working hard to resolve the problem. Except reports are they met at the governors mansion yesterday for only THREE HOURS. Three hours isn't going to cut it.

For the first time in history, NJ casinos have closed! Our local news showed this morning the closing of all casinos in Atlantic City. All non-essential state services have already been closed down, including parks, lottery sales, race tracks and historic sites. The casinos alone contribute $1.5M a day in taxes. At this rate, it would take a long time to make up the deficit that already exists in the budget. This state is a mess! All because our newly elected Governor refuses to budge on his proposed sales tax increase from 6% to 7%. That's all this state knows is how to tax the citizens further. It will be interesting to see how long this is allowed to continue.
I really didn't think they would let the casinos close. Its political suicide. The two major voting blocks in New Jersey are the unions and the seniors - both of which LOVE the casinos. Me thinks the incumbants may have problems come election time.

Well screw the casinos. The cops, child welfare and mental hospital employees are now working without pay. These people need to get their heads out of their butts and figure out a way to fix this and QUICK. :doh:

That always amazes me. Those politicians need to be in there with their camping gear! OR...take away THEIR pay until they do what they were elected to do! I bet they'd get it resolved rather quickly that way....

"They'll be announcing the final elements later this afternoon," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the governor will announce the deal.
The deal includes a sales tax increase that would raise $1.1 billion a year, a different high-ranking Statehouse official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Half of the new money would be used to lower property taxes this year, and all of it would go for that purpose next year, the official said. I agree with you Jeana...but without the travel business to the casinos, the state income decreases dramatically. You are laying off thousands of people that cannot/do not pay local or state income taxes if they have no casino/hotel/tourism industry to work in. Tourists will not come and spend the $$ in sales tax revenue. If tourists are not in hotels, the linen services and resturant suppliers don't get paid...as a former President once said, it is all about trickle down economy.
By being stubborn and not doing their job, the government is cutting their own throats.... :doh:
