This has to be so heartbreaking for her family.
Peggy Sue was abducted from a park near her home in November 1984. Hunters found her body five days later in a wooded area in Hancock County; she had been raped and stabbed, and her throat had been slashed.
Jerry Watkins, Peggy Sue's brother-in-law, was convicted of her murder in 1986 and served 14 years in prison before being released by a federal judge in 2000 after DNA evidence could not tie him to the crime. He received a $475,000 settlement for wrongful conviction.
In 2001, Joseph McCormick, Indianapolis, was charged with murder based on DNA evidence. The charges, however, were reduced because evidence could not support a murder conviction, and also in exchange for his cooperation in the investigation. McCormick denied killing Peggy Sue but admitted molesting her after the abduction.
In 2002, Kenneth Munson, his brother Hugh Munson and William L. Beever were charged with murder in the case.
But charges against Beever were dropped in 2004 after prosecutors said they needed to investigate additional information. Hugh Munson was cleared in the slaying. Kenneth Munson pleaded guilty to the battery charge for which he was convicted.
"It's been the same old thing for 20 years," Peggy Sue's father, George Altes, 69, said Wednesday. "We want this settled before we die."
