This has to be so heartbreaking for her family.

Peggy Sue was abducted from a park near her home in November 1984. Hunters found her body five days later in a wooded area in Hancock County; she had been raped and stabbed, and her throat had been slashed.
Jerry Watkins, Peggy Sue's brother-in-law, was convicted of her murder in 1986 and served 14 years in prison before being released by a federal judge in 2000 after DNA evidence could not tie him to the crime. He received a $475,000 settlement for wrongful conviction.
In 2001, Joseph McCormick, Indianapolis, was charged with murder based on DNA evidence. The charges, however, were reduced because evidence could not support a murder conviction, and also in exchange for his cooperation in the investigation. McCormick denied killing Peggy Sue but admitted molesting her after the abduction.
In 2002, Kenneth Munson, his brother Hugh Munson and William L. Beever were charged with murder in the case.
But charges against Beever were dropped in 2004 after prosecutors said they needed to investigate additional information. Hugh Munson was cleared in the slaying. Kenneth Munson pleaded guilty to the battery charge for which he was convicted.
"It's been the same old thing for 20 years," Peggy Sue's father, George Altes, 69, said Wednesday. "We want this settled before we die."

I couldn't find where this has been posted but I find the article worth noting:

INDIANAPOLIS -- A man who served prison time in connection with the 1984 gang rape and slaying of an 11-year-old Indianapolis girl is wanted on suspicion of violating his probation, police said...

...Joseph Mark McCormick, 44, who served three years in prison after pleading guilty in 2003 to molesting Peggy Sue Altes, failed a drug test as part of his probation in March and cannot be located, police said Monday. A warrant for his arrest was issued in March in Hancock County...

NOTE:
...Police said Altes was abducted from the streets of her Indianapolis neighborhood, raped by more than one person and killed in 1984. She was stabbed 17 times and her throat was cut. Her body was found in a wooded area in Hancock County that year...

You'll have to read the whole article but he only served 3 years!! Something is terribly wrong in our justice system.

Joseph Mark McCormick
Another murderer and pedophile among us.

Three years. The life of an innocent child is worth three measly years. Yeah, that is terribly screwed up :(

Poor Peggy Altes and her grieving family. A three year sentence for the life of an eleven year old and her family having to live with their grief forever makes me sick to my stomach :(

Sad that even prison justice did not befall this guy-terrible thing for me to say but these sickos who murder children just do not deserve breathing.

Did his partner in crime, Beevers, ever stand trial? I see links from the link in Cathieq's post to more information and in 2004 it says he might face trial again, but there is no update.

The one guy served 3 years...not nearly enough time....what about the others? Did they get off Scott free?

This November will mark 30 years since the murder of Peggy Sue. Does anyone have any recent information about the investigation?

Peggy Sue Altes was abducted from an Indianapolis park near her home in November 1984. Her body was found by hunters five days later in a wooded area. She had been raped and stabbed and her throat slashed.

A new tip in a 22-year-old murder case leads investigators to dig up a farmer's field in Perry Township. The tip came from a prisoner who claims he can also lead police to the murder weapon. The evidence dates back to 1984.

That's when 11-year-old Peggy Sue Altes disappeared from an Indianapolis park. Five days later her naked body was found in Hancock County. She had been raped, her throat slashed, her body stabbed.

"Basically this case is more than 20 years old. We'd like to know what the facts are about what happened and we'd like to bring the people to justice that are involved in it," says Larry Gossett, Hancock County Prosecutor.

A tip lead detectives to a Perry Township farm. The tip came from a man who claimed he buried Peggy Sues clothing there 22 years ago.

Kenneth Munson is currently serving time for battery in connection with the Altes rape and murder case. The prosecutor says Munson claims to know who killed the girl and says he can show investigators where the murder weapon, a knife, is located
