    FL - Carolyn Brown, 27, & 3 kids, Port St Lucie, 16 July 1985

    Carolyn Denise Brown
Missing since July 16, 1985 from Port St. Lucie, St. Lucie County, Florida.
    Classification: Endangered Missing

    Vital Statistics
    • Date Of Birth: September 6, 1957
    • Age at Time of Disappearance: 27 years old
    • Height and Weight at Time of Disappearance: 5'6; 180 lbs.
    • Distinguishing Characteristics: Black female. Black hair; brown eyes. Carolyn wears eyeglasses.
    • Dentals: She has a gap in front teeth

    Circumstances of Disappearance
Carolyn was married to James Michael Brown in 1985. They had three children together; Sheketa, Barry and Brandon.
Carolyn and the children disappeared on July 16, 1985. James was initially missing with his family, but he resurfaced in the Port St. Lucie area several weeks afterwards. James told authorities that he shot Carolyn while she slept inside their home during the night of their disappearances. James said that Brandon was sleeping beside his mother; he claimed that he smothered the child with a pillow, then buried both of their bodies in Belle Glade, Florida. James told investigators that he drove Sheketa and Barry to Georgia along Interstate 95 on July 17, three days after Carolyn and Brandon were murdered. James said he shot Barry in the head and his daughter in the face, then disposed of their remains along the highway.
A jury acquitted James in Carolyn and Sheketa's deaths in late 1985. He was never charged with Brandon and Barry's homicides, as authorities were not certain of the location of the presumed murders. Extensive searches of the areas produced no evidence as to the family's whereabouts.
A court-appointed psychiatrist diagnosed him as a paranoid schizophrenic. James was committed to a Florida mental health facility after the court's decision in 1985. He was moved to a halfway house in 1996 and released from the program in 1997. James has been under investigation since his release for psychotic episodes. Carolyn, Sheketa, Brandon and Barry have never been located.

    Anthrobone,
I know this case well and have actually been inside the house where they were living at the time this occured. If I remember correctly James Brown was a teacher at the time or at least worked for the school system. I think that it is wrong that he was not commited for life and is now free.
I brought this case up once before http://www.websleuths.com/forums/sho...ht=James+Brown

I'm sure the LE's along the I-95 route in Georgia were notified of the possibility of bodies being disposed of in their areas at the time the investigation was actively being persued, but have these same LE's been reminded of this since the widening of I-95 from the Florida line to Savannah? I am sure construction crews come along remains from animals in the course of their land disturbance work, but shouldn't it be brought up that these remains should be verified animal before just continuing with their work? I don't know or think that it would be standard procedure for that to be done.

Just a thought I had about this.

This John Doe seems to fit a lot like Barry. Doe was found 1999. They suspect he had been there several months....but is it possible he'd been there a few years? Can some one help me investigate this? http://www.missingkids.com/missingki...archLang=en_US

Here is the NamUs case file for this John Doe.

    https://identifyus.org/cases/6002

The John Doe was found 13-14 years after Barry went missing. I think that gap is way too large for this UID to be Barry.

Interestingly, the info on NamUS appears as if this was added as a courtesy to NCMEC, as they are refering tips to NCMEC. NamUs states no dentals available, yet the image at NamUs shows crowded teeth. I'm pretty sure NCMEC has already compared the two, but it might not hurt to just call NCMEC and ask.

HTH. Keep looking and thanks for your interest in this case.

Bumping for this tragic case. All of them are in NamUs, so hopefully one day they can be identified. Even though the father was declared insane, it doesn't make sense that he would be released back into society. He kept changing his story on where he placed the bodies, making it difficult to recover them. The last I was able to find was that he was living in a small town in Florida and working part-time at a business owned by his brother. He was also taking anti-psychotic medications and meeting with a social worker once a month. If he's still alive today, he would be about 67 or 68.

This Charley Project Blog Post about the Brown Family discusses the not guilty by reason of insanity. I wonder if the same ruling would have been done if this crime had happened today.

I have not come across any images of what James Michael Brown looked like in 1985 or during that time. However, I have come across a mugshot for a James M. Brown in Leon County, FL from 1997 for violating a conditional release from St. Lucie County. He was 47 at the time and age 67 as of 2017 if he is indeed alive. This would give his age at 35 in 1985, the same age he was listed in the 1985 news articles.
