WELD COUNTY, Colo. -- The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a strange death in Weld County.

The body of an 18-year-old woman was found lying in the road on County Road 126 near Highway 85 early Thursday morning.

Officers do not know how the woman got there. They're investigating whether she was hit by a vehicle or fell out of one. Officers said it's unusual for someone to be out in such a rural area that early in the morning

A woman killed by a hit-and-run driver on Weld County Road 126 less than a mile west of State Highway 85 has been identified as Makahla L. Belew, 18, of Carr.

State Patrol Trooper Gilbert Mares said Belew was walking westbound on the county road when she was hit by an eastbound vehicle.

He said its believed she was near the center of the roadway when hit.

The driver of the vehicle apparently didnt stop and assistance is requested from anyone who may have been traveling in the area of the accident last evening or early this morning. Anyone with information is asked to call 303-239-4501.
