Torres was last seen when he went out looking for bottles in his Uphams Corner neighborhood in Dorchester, Massachusetts on May 9, 1983.
Torres was a student at Hennigan Elementary School in Jamaica Plain when he went missing.
Boston Police scoured the Uphams Corner neighborhood for a week after the boy was reported missing at 6:30 p.m. on May 9. The following Saturday, 50 National Guardsmen combed sections of Dorchester and Roxbury. On May 16, Police Comr. Joseph M. Jordan called off the search and said Wilfredo's case has been added to the missing persons files. The only trace of the child police have is a pair of black nylon sneakers they found near the apartment.
Boston Police Supt. John F. Geagan said it was the most intensive police and National Guard search for a missing child since 1977, when a South End girl disappeared and was never found.
