What made investigators take John Karr so seriously?

If there have been others who have confessed falsely to this crime,
I'd love to know WHY law enforcement took JMK at his word that he
    murdered Jonbenet.

If he told them something known only to a select few who have worked on
the case, I'm hoping that information will become known to the public.

I feel that Karr is a total obsessed kook who fantasized about Jonbenet....
    but nothing more.
    Justice for Jonbenet!

No, coincidence that Tracey is going to be 'spruiking' a book. now everyone(!) will buy it. Why did LE 'suddenly' sit up and notice Karr? This is a question best addressed at Tracey and he is not gonna 'talk' especially not till his book comes out.Seems to me that Karr has been peddling his 'wierdness fetish ' for JBR for ages. Why all of a sudden has someone noticed. This is the Big question that everyone wants to see answered. But what we really want to know is did he do it?

I think Tracey started all this for selfish reasons, and the DA ran with it because they had nothing better... not to mention that it fits their IDI theory. At the end of this Karr episode I just see the DA having egg on her face, and Tracey laughing all the way to the bank.

The Boulder DA's office wants the warrant for John Mark Karr to remain sealed because, their filing says, there is information about evidence in the case that hasn't been made public or developed "independently" (whatever that means?) by the media.

The district attorney's court filing said much of the evidence used to arrest Karr has not been made public, "nor has the media developed it independently."
The motion, filed in Boulder County District Court, argued against allowing the public to see the affidavit outlining the evidence used to obtain a warrant for Karr's arrest.

Six media outlets, including The Associated Press, had asked the court Monday to unseal the affidavit. No ruling has been issued.

However the case against JMK stands or falls, the DA presently contends to the court that there is potential evidence listed in the warrant that is sufficient to suspect, arrest, and charge him for the murder of JonBenét.

...it may be that they are not taking...

...his allegations about JBR that seriously, but are using this situaiton to get this nutball off the streets, and to ensure that he is convicted for any crimes he committed more recently...

I think "independently" means when the media has information concerning a case from sources, court documents, etc. and then is able to report those findings as facts.

Here is another article along the same lines as the one you link above.

    http://www.denverpost.com/jonbenet/ci_4228050

I was interested in the following paragraph:

Meanwhile, a past investigator of the Ramsey case, said evidence that could confirm Karr's involvement in the former beauty queen's homicide includes what was written on the first draft of the ransom note.

Maybe the answers lie in the microscopic evidence found by Microtrace on JonBenét's body and clothing:

    August 25, 2006
(CBS) CHICAGO Forensic scientist Skip Palenik is used to getting calls from police. But two weeks ago, he got a call from a detective that stopped him cold.

It came from a Boulder police detective in the murder investigation of JonBenet Ramsey.

“I've had the evidence back here at my laboratory,” Palenik said. “He called and said he was coming to pick it up, so I wondered what was going on.”

Days later, the arrest of John Mark Karr, who confessed to killing Ramsey, hit the news, and Palenik knew why police wanted what had sat in his lab for a decade.

“We were examining the microscopic evidence from her body that was collected right after the murder,” he said.

Investigators had removed some particles collected from the 6-year-old's body and clothing by hand and some with tape. When it came to examining them, they turned to this tiny lab in Elgin – more than 1,000 miles away – where the best investigators in the world come for answers.

Yep Tracey said he was going to write his book and then retire......rich with money off ANOTHER false suspect!

Tracey loves to call press conferences to harp on the media attention to the JonBenet case and yet fails to discuss the contents of his last few documentaries.....the wrong suspects targeted.

But then again Tracey could care less who killed JonBenet, as long as he can keep making a fortune off the case.

The ransom note pages were torn from a pad/tablet of paper found in the Ramsey kitchen. Pages 1-12 were missing; pages 13-16 had miscellaneous household writings and doodles; pages 17-25 were missing; page 26 was attached & had "Mr and Mrs I" written at the top in felt tip pen; and the ransom note was written in felt tip pen on pages 27, 28 & 29, which had also been torn out of the pad.

Steve Thomas wrote in his book pp73-74:

"...the ink bleedthrough discovered on page 26 indicated that perhaps still another practice note could have been written on page 25 (the page with only Mr and Mrs I written at the top) and had been discarded. Two possible practice notes and one real one covering three pages led me to believe that the killer had spent more time in the house composing the ransom note than we had originally thought."

Notice that Thomas used "perhaps" and "could have" rather than positives. So,if Karr wrote something on the missing page 25 of the pad, and if he could remember what he'd written, it might be possible to determine from the bleedthrough on page 26 a confirmation of what he claimed to have written on page 25.

On the other hand, the bleedthrough might not be related to writing of the ransom note on pages 27, 28, and 29 at all. As far as I know, any words that might have been able to be deciphered from the bleedthrough have never been revealed to the public, including the forums which usually glean much more info that the public notices through the media.

    Just my opinion

but since you asked I´ll try to answer your question.

A Homeland Security agent was present when Karr was arrested. Federal agents escorted Karr from Thailand. The US government was involved with the arrest from the beginning.

All news from the US and the world was trumped or preempted by news of the arrest of Karr. For about a week Karr´s arrest seem to take precedence over Iraq, Lebanon, Hezbollah, terror plots, everything. Get the picture.

Was there a strong physical resemblance between JAR and JMK in late 1996? Ramsey neighbor Joe Barnhill originally said to a reporter that he thought he saw JAR, but, according to Steve Thomas' book p71, later "sheepishly" admitted that he probably couldn't pick JAR out of a crowd.

Barnhill, like other neighbors, didn't remember seeing anything suspicious at the Ramsey house Christmas Day - the day before JonBenet was murdered.

"I didn't see a lot of people over there Christmas Day," said Barnhill, who had hidden until Christmas Eve the bicycle JonBenet's father had bought his daughter. "I didn't see JonBenet with her bike, but I did see (her 10-year-old brother) Burke ride his bike down the lawn there."

Barnhill also said he saw John Ramsey's son from a previous marriage, a student at CU, come to the house.

Hi Lovely, WOW, you tapped into an interesting article for sure. It sounds like this tiny piece of evidence was previously undiscovered and could be a little bombshell for DNA evidence in the case.

Hi Gls, nice to meet you! I can not imagine that the Boulder DA was involved in an event that was designed to upstage the events in the ongoing wars happening in the Middle East!

Evidently there was a real reason for arresting and flying him back before they normally would have picked him up. Acc to the former Deputy DA in Boulder, a hard envelope was sent to the professor from Karr which he believes held something that proved Karrs involvement in or knowledge of the murder. I read a quote yesterday that made the point that Mary would not have moved on this arrest unless she had a darn good reason to.

The Karr news pushed international and some national news off the front page. I can see a "Wag the Dog" plan.
