Hurricane off Mexico now Category 4

John is offshore but track could change and its reach is broad

While the storm’s eye was not projected to hit land, the center said hurricane-force winds were likely to begin lashing beaches northwest of Acapulco and Ixtapa late Wednesday.

John had maximum sustained winds of 135 mph, with stronger gusts.

John was running parallel to the coast and was not expected to affect the United States. The forecast path would carry the storm out to sea below Los Cabos at the tip of the Baja California peninsula, but forecasters warned that track could vary.

How did we get to John already? Or do the pacific hurricanes have a different list?

At first I thought this was a joke about JMK being extradited to CA. :blushing:

If you read the links and look at the map it says that it will NOT hit California. It will go out into the ocean. We might want to change the title of this thread so it doesn't freak anyone out.

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico - Hurricane John churned parallel to Mexico's resort-studded Pacific Coast, lashing beaches with winds and rain and plotting a course that could take its center close to land before nicking the tip of Baja:eek: California.

MANZANILLO, Mexico - Hurricane John triggered evacuations Thursday and punished Mexican ports and beaches with huge sea surges, heavy rains and strong winds as the powerful storm swirled in the Pacific Ocean off the coast.

In southern Baja California, officials said at least 10,000 people will be evacuated and tourists were warned to hole up in their hotels

Jose Gajon, head of civil protection for the state of  Baja California Sur, said locals living in low-lying areas around the Los Cabos beach resort will be taken to shelters, by force if necessary, before the storm pummels the region Friday.
Meanwhile, a new hurricane formed further west. Hurricane Kristy, with nearly 75 mph wind, was about 690 miles away from John, but forecasters said some interaction was possible. If that happened, Kristy would likely be absorbed by the larger John, forecasters said.

I heard this morning there was a Cat 5 hurricane that had winds up to 175 mph out in the Pacific. Wake Island was totally evacuated as it was in the projected path, and a good thing. The hurricane swept over Wake island with 32' of water, completely covering the island, and in fact the FOX newscaster said the island might be gone!

Can you imagine this?

ETA: Sorry, it was a typhoon with hurricane force winds:

Just announced about 5000 more to get out of dodge before John hits with a cat3...
Think this is the first time we've had storms hitting both coasts at about the same time....

John, which was upgraded to a Category 3 hurricane, was expected to make landfall somewhere along the southern tip of the peninsula around midday. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 115 mph and could drop up to 18 inches of rain in places and create up to a 5-foot storm surge, forecasters at the U.S. National Weather Center in Miami said.

You would think that they would at least fly over and see if the island is still there. Thank goodness they evacuated everyone before it was hit.

Depending on what station you listen to, it's either 5000 or 7000 tourist that can't get out now...:banghead:
No one can come in or leave....:waitasec:

Hope everyone stays safe....

Hi Shadow,

I just looked for an update and learned the military will fly over after the storm is gone, and the storm is heading towards Japan.

Everything will be gone they say, unless it was made out of concrete. Wake island is really 3 differend islands that are a coral rock atol. They are skinny islands that form a U shape with a huge lagoon in the center.

It is the strongest storm that has hit in 10 years, as gusts whipped up to 191mph. I haven't found a good article though that tells the kind of info I heard on a TV newscast. They had a military man from Hawaiii on the phone who told about the efrfrect of the storm surge, and at the end he said in effect it means there will be 32' of ocean on top of the islands. That just blew mn mind.

There were 188 people, all military including family members, that were taken off the island on Monday. Hope they took all their stuff with, as it won't be there when they go back, which I doubt they will. I think it will have to be rebuilt first.

Hey, I wouldn't mind being stuck in Honolulu while they rebuild the refueling station, would you? LOL
