AZ - Inmates take officers hostage, Buckeye, 2004

BUCKEYE, Ariz. - Negotiators began a fourth day of talks Wednesday with two inmates who took two correctional officers hostage in a prison guard tower.

The standoff began Sunday morning after an inmate attacked a guard in the prison kitchen. The prisoner and another inmate then got into an observation tower where the two guards, one male and one female, were stationed.

Prison officials had initially said the male guard was injured, though they did not disclose details of the injury.

Hopefully this stand off ends soon (safely) and the guards are allowed to go home to their families. I bet they are "at wits end" worrying about their loved ones.

All this stems from the archaic concept of giving prisoners mobility inside a prison instead of keeping them in their cells at all times. In the days of understaffing, prisoners controlled the prison and guards controlled the walls but with modern technology of camera and remote controlled stun guns there is no excuse for a prisoner to be uncontrolled at any time. Constant surveillance and immediate stun gunning for any infraction should be the rule. Its no longer cost prohibitive.

Arizona Prison ~ Hostage Crisis Continues ~ Day 9

Can you believe it's been 9 full days and one guard is still being held hostage in a Watchtower full of weapons at an Arizona Prison?! Prisoners have been on lockdown since the beginning .. Jan. 18.

Ariz. Hostage Crisis Taking Toll on Some

BUCKEYE, Ariz. (AP) -- A hostage situation at an Arizona prison began to take its toll on staff Monday as authorities negotiated for a ninth straight day for the release of a guard being held by two inmates.

Supervisors had difficulty persuading some workers to go home as the situation dragged on, said Sgt. M. Ball, who helps state prison employees deal with stress during crises.

"They're frustrated, tired and they want this to be over," Ball said. "This hits close to home. This is our worst nightmare."

Two guards at Arizona State Prison Complex-Lewis were taken prisoner Jan. 18 and forced into a watchtower. One of the guards was released Saturday. Officials have declined to identify the inmates and the guards or to say what the inmates are demanding.

Overnight negotiations have been quieter in recent days, said state corrections spokeswoman Cam Hunter. One inmate continued a daily routine Monday of walking around the tower's observation deck and leaning over to look down its sides.
