BARTOW, Fla. (AP) - Defense attorneys argued Tuesday that a man charged with killing four people at a central Florida factory in 1997 did not have enough time to carry out the murders.

Prosecutors contend 67-year-old Nelson Serrano pulled off an elaborate scheme to kill his former business associates in only 10 hours. But in opening arguments at his trial Tuesday, his defense attorneys said there was no direct evidence linking him to the slayings.

Phil Dosso bought his own company - the scene of Polk County's worst mass murder - Thursday for $56,000. He did it by bidding $1,000 more than the son of the man convicted of killing Dosso's son, daughter, son-in-law and business partner.

And now about $9,300 of Dosso's money will go to the ex-wife of that same killer, Nelson Serrano, who is on Florida's death row. Another $9,300 will be put in escrow until legal questions are resolved over who should get it.

A judge ordered Erie Manufacturing sold in a courtroom auction to settle a long-standing legal dispute over its ownership. At the time of the killings, Serrano owned one-third of the business.
